The Marshall AFD Head Is Killer Sounding

STRATDELUXER97

Stratoblaster Tone Meister
My tone being pretty much based around the Marshall sound...I Love this amp...I used to also own a JCM 800 but this amp sounds killer on the videos..

Any pedal that would allow me to sought of cheat and create this tone through my ole 50 watt NMV Marshall? This thing is pretty pricey at 2k...The built in power attenuator is a great idea "finally" with these monster amps..

Re: The Marshall AFD Head Is Killer Sounding

Hi John, howdy?

Have tried this amp for more than an hour, at 100W, highest volumes (i.e. not using its post pi master vol, and no attenuators of any kind), with a Gibson LP Custom, and 1960B (v30) cab.

Very nice amp. Hated its #34 side, was weak thin and lacked muscle. Yet, the AFD side was simply great. In fact, I also could compare it head to head (with the same cab, guitar ... ) with a early 80s 2203. Liked that AFD more actually.

Very nice amp.

You don't need any drive pedals. Believe me!

B :)

Hi Doc....I won't be buying the AFD amp and also asked about a pedal that would work in front of my early 50 watt Marshall that could sought of get it? Pretty much JCM 800ish but better sounding from what I'm hearing.

Re: The Marshall AFD Head Is Killer Sounding

Yeah I'd like to know about a pedal for this to. I've been jamming AFD all day and Slash's tone on that album is just has this thickness, but still has a real good singing quality to it. I know some of it comes from the A2 PAF type pickups, but man....

Re: The Marshall AFD Head Is Killer Sounding

I actually tried to play one in Guitar Center today, but it wasn't working. All I kept getting was a bunch of noise and some clean tone. Couldn't get any gain no matter what I did. It sounds amazing from the videos I see, but what could have been the problem? I did see that it was paired with a crappy MA412.

Re: The Marshall AFD Head Is Killer Sounding

Sorry, I missed the pedal part!

:banghead:

John, you've got a good amp anyway. All you gotta do is to push it with a right eq and tightness... As crazy as it might sound, the closest I came to that tone with my 1987 clone (68 preamp, 400V plate voltage, Tungsol EL34B) was with quite a high volume ~8, with the right eq, and Timmy.

Some of you guys might think that there is a contagious mental illness or something, many people suggesting that pedal for lotsa applications and all. But it is true. It simply is wonderful.

The other AFD tone I could get was through my Blues Jr. with a new pedal by a local manufacturer (and friend). Actually, he is not that local at all, has been shipping to Japan Australia, of course, Europe and all... Alen Geere, and the pedal is called Leader... He sent me one to try, and am gonna be shooting a video for it. But the crazy thing is that with a simple Blues Jr. I was quite close to that AFD tone. Of course, this pedal won't work on a plexi, has tons of gain. So would be kinda overkill (hence, the Timmy). Anyways, am gonna be shooting a video for that pedal very soon, and will let you guys know (of course, if you are interested).

PS. John, with your skills... Why don't you build one?

Seriously! Of course it won't be cheap, yet in this link Caswell also showed up, when they were discussion the schematics of the SIR #36, i.e. the real AFD.

Re: The Marshall AFD Head Is Killer Sounding

I played one for about an hour at GC the first time I saw one, and wasn't surprised that it's really similar to the sound of a Jubilee. I've owned a 100W Jubilee, and will never sell my 50W Jubilee, so the AFD would be completely redundant for me. They're very similar sounding amps, although the string to string clarity is a bit nicer on my Jubilee.

Now, I'm dying to try the YJM100. From what I've heard in clips and know about it, it's way closer to the sound I like nowadays, which is the hotrodded vintage Marshall tone I get from Bogner. Which also means the YJM100 would be redundant for me, since the XTC has that sound with more versatility. And $2500 means it's not happening.

Both are the best amps Marshall has made in decades, although I'm leery of their reliability. Possibly over-engineered. Since their release I've heard of too many problems.....with the AFD.....the verdict is still out on the YJM since almost nobody has one yet.

For $2500 worth of redundancy, I'd pick up another used XTC and set it up with different tubes or something :headbang:

i am i the only one who hates marshalls website?

Re: The Marshall AFD Head Is Killer Sounding

Sorry, I kind of missed the point of the thread, but on a plexi type amp, I'd go for something crunchy like an MXR 78 or MXR Classic Distortion. If you still had the 800, most OD's do the trick.

And I agree about the Wampler pedals. He's really voiced those things right.
