Re: The Maxon OD808 compared to the Arion Tubulator...
On the other hand, the Tubulator's $9.99, if you watch for a sale. Great bargain at the price, if you like that sort of thing, and among the declining number of mod-able ODs being built as surface-mount robotic PCB build takes over.
I have a shelf full of overdrives. Hate all of them.
My experience has lead me to the conclusion that you get what you pay for alot of times.
The two overdrives I find I gravitate to the most often are my ZenDrive and my Wasabi Overdrive.
I own a Keeley TS9, a Spina TS9DX, two Spina SD1's and a Bad Monkey. All of them are good pedals. On some days I like one more than another. Depending on what I'm going for I'm finding that one will work better than the other. But usually it's for one single trick or application or sound.
The ZenDrive and the Wasabi are the two I grab for a three-set night of music that's going to have some serious changes in it....Stone Temple Pilots to Eric Clapton, Blue Oyster Cult to BB King and The Foo Fighters to The Stones.
On the Wasabi there are three modes I use for different voicings and different amonts of gain and mix to taste. On the ZenDrive I have two but I find that it's more responsive than any other pedal so when i lean on it, the thing jumps the way I want it to. it acts more as an "enhancer" at times and I'm prone just to leave it on fairly often and let it color the signal rather than using it to punch anything up.
The Tube Screamers are great pedals. I love them for the overdrive and mid-range hump, a quality I'm finding I NEED alot more often than I ever thought I would. They do great for that, almost as an EQ pedal in the mix as well with a very delicate push. When I'm thinking I need one the odds are I NEED one, and only one of them will do. I tend to reach for the Bad Monkey when I think the mids don't need to be mucked with at all and wish I could bypass that quality altogether. It's the exception to the rule as far as cheap pedals go.
Unfortunately for alot of folks they have to dig in and get their hands dirty. A pedal on the front of one amp is going to behave differently than in front of another. It's a hit-and-miss thing and every amp will be unique. Whether you like it or not is the question. I also find that it takes me awhile to really evaluate the unit; I can get it but it won't be until I have it in front of the same amp for awhile that I really "get" it. The only one that defied that was the ZenDrive, but that pedal is a totally different beast.
My advice...is going to be to get something and try it. The Tube Screamers are great pedals and alot of folks have done exceptionally well by them. Give it a month and see how you like it. Buy it off eBay and re-sell it if you don't dig it. But make it a point to give ti a chance and tweak the knobs on both the amp and the pedal. You may find that it alters your tone wholly in a way that grows on you.
