I have a 335-style git... and am thinking of putting it up for sale and getting something different.

What do you think the most versatile guitar is? I'm not looking for a death metal axe, but want to range from rock-n-roll to a subdued bluesy sound....

Split DD in the bridge

Phat Cat in the neck.

The neck shape is pretty much a catchall on those guitars, not too thick, not too thin, perfect for just about anything... the split will give you a nice cleaner stratty tone, the DD will pretty much deal with your distortion... and everyone needs a P90:D

Get it with a floyd if you want

there are a gazillion answers to this question ...

i'l pick one of them to offer, although if i saw this post 5 minutes ago, i'd pick a different one ... or if i wouldve seen it 5 minutes from now ...

i'd say an H-S-H strat with a split switch on the humbuckers, and a push/pull to allow n+b combos - regular trem, roller nut / locking tuners ... if money is no object, the PRS 513 must get high regards in the category of versatile ... the PRS swamp ash special is also worth a look ... my hotrodded ibanez 540s suits me just fine in this regard ...

given that ted nugent use to wail on a hollow body and george lynch shreds on a tele ... and mike stern plays jazz on a tele and steve howe plays anything he damn well pleases on a hollow body ... and les pauls have been used by everyone from al dimeola to d!ckey betts and .. well .. les paul ... and strats can do country, blues, classic rock, metal, etc ... i gues i'm just trying to say that versatility comes alot more from the player than from the guitar ... find one that fits your hands and inspires you to play you best ...

Right now I'm on a kick for a Hamer Monaco III. They're ES style but come with 3 P90s. Jol Dantzig played one for us last night. I was blown away by how many different sounds that guitar was capable of. It's a similar body style, so it may not be different enough for you. Go play one if you have a dealer nearby that carries them.

My vote would go to a guitar with the switching system like a Les Paul. In effect, you have two independent "channels" with the guitar- the bridge pickup set at a certain volume and tone, and the neck can be set to an entirely different volume and tone, switchable with a flick of the finger.

The most versatile guitar is probably the PRS 513. 5 pickups, 13 tonal variations, and that's without turning a knob. The new Taylor T5 is pretty versatile as well.

GET OUTTA HERE, TROLL! just kidding. i actually say go for the fat strat instead. or maybe a strat with something like hot rails bridge, cool rails neck, and vintage rails mid.

The fat strat would be a much less expensive alternative, though you only get 5 distinct pickup combinations with them instead of 13.

ok, that was cheating. my real vote is for a fat strat H-S-S config. very underestimated but versatile.

It's hard to beat an H-S-S strat with a blend pot. I have mine setup so it sounds like a p90-s-s strat and I love it. I can go from Jimi to dirty blues rock with the flick of a switch.

I'd go with a Strat type with H-S-S setup. Depending on the pup's you put in, it should be pretty versatile.

An H-H guitar with splits for both coils and/or series/parrellel switches is pretty versitle.
and i agree with the jimmy page wiring too.
