The New EVH Frankenstein Humbucker Namm 2018 and the new black and white frankie

As you may perhaps know EVH is releasing the limited edition of the black and white frankie with correct specs and relicing. It is extremely limited in numbers. Moreover 8 of them will have eddie playing eruption on them with a video as record of it. (those after his death will certainly reach the milion in value...).

What interested me a lot is that the guy at the evh stand said to sweetwater that the frankenstein pickup in it was a PAF so it is clearly another pickup compared to the one of the red evh fankenstein. This one is certainly close to the 78 model.

Could it be the 78 model or another thing made by Seymour duncan ?

I once asked the custom shop for the original thing that eddie used they told me they couldn't sell me that but that the 78 model was the closest clone.

Do you think that seymour duncan will release this new pickup if they made it ?

One short line in that video is the only thing I've seen that kind of, sort of, vaguely, faintly, barely hints that it could be a different pickup than the standard "Frankenstein" model.

Honestly, with the haphazard use of the term "PAF" in the guitar world, especially in marketing circles, I wouldn't get my hopes up...it's probably nothing special.

That said, the Duncan-made "Frankenstein", the similar Custom Shop "IM1" and the '78 are all killer pickups. In fact, all of the EVH branded and EVH-designed/inspired pickups have been pro grade in my experience and usable for more than just VH styles. That includes the Wolfgang, DiMarzio "Axis" pickups, etc...all good stuff!

the spec sheet clearly states it uses an EVH Frankenstein humbucker, and in the video the guy doesn't say it was a PAF, he says it is a Frankenstein, "which would have been the PAF of that era". All he's saying, right or wrong, is that the EVH Frankenstein used was a PAF styled pickup. Not everyone is as fanatical about pickups as we are...he sounded more excited about the case than the pickup!

I've found that a great case really adds to the overall tone and playability of a quality instrument.

Re: The New EVH Frankenstein Humbucker Namm 2018 and the new black and white frankie

The real thing was just an A8 magnet in a PAF

Which coincidentally is also what the Ibanez Super 70's in the good old destroyer were, A8 PAFs

Whether they realized that or just swapped mags around between pups they liked or took an actual Super 70 and rebuilt/opened up/rewound it idk

First off, where did you get this knowledge and which "real thing" are you referring to? I've heard he had a Super 70 in his Destroyer (which most of VH1 was recorded on) and a stock '62 ES-335 bridge on Frankie, but I don't recall where I heard it.

Back to the guitar, apparently it's called the Super 78 and every last one of them will be autographed by Eddie and include a flash drive with a film of him playing Eruption on your guitar. It also comes with a distressed case and period correct oil.

Franky never had an A8-based pickup in it. A2 (original PAF that he potted), Ceramic (DiMarzio Super Distortion), and maybe some A5s with other pickups, yeah, but the A8s stayed with the Destroyer in the Super 70s.

The B&W era would actually have had that PAF that Eddie dipped in wax, warping the bobbins, or a DiMarzio Super Distortion.

Here's a great thread with lots of information about the guitar over at VHLinks: http://www.vhlinks.com/vbforums/threads/51924-The-Franky-A-Pictorial-History

Cuz if they got any more obvious about it, they couldnt well SELL the legend, seeing how it isnt theirs to sell...

Like duh

Plus it's marketing 101: secret sauce tales sell waaaay better and are a LOT easier to keep profiting from than a frank ingredient list and recipe

Absolutely mind blowing!! That Super '78 in particular would be extremely collectible and fetch massive money if/when Eddie sadly dies since he played the shred catapult classic Eruption on each one and you get a recording of it in the case. Quite the piece indeed. All that candy makes my mouth water! Just wish I could get my hands on one of those machines :D
All 3 of them in fact but the ones he played personally are even more special. What will the retail be on one of those I wonder...I'm sure there will be people buying at least some of them simply to resell for a profit.

I've had a few Ibanez guitars with the Super 70 (A8 magnet) pickups in them. They are compressed and lack character. You'll find yourself fighting your guitar to get the goods. A2 and A5 are better, as you can tweak your sound (via EQ and compressor) to cop that A8 sound and feel. My personal favorite is a vintage wind with U/O A5 rough cast magnets.
