The Peasant's Guide to Gilmour tone?

Re: The Peasant's Guide to Gilmour tone?

I had the DG-20 set and I can tell you right now, those pickups sucked. Half the reason Gilmour got the tone he did was from his Hiwatt and various array of mucho expensive Cornish pedals. That singing lead tone you hear on stuff like the Wall is from his neck single coil through a Cornish SS-2 Soft Sustain pedal.

As metioned earlier in the thread, a Jimmie Vaughan strat is great bang for the buck and if the stock pups don't work, take a look around for some replacements. I've nailed Gilmours strat tones with the WCR "SR" set, but they're almost as expensive as the guitar you should be looking at.

A Jimmie Vaughan strat will do great for Gilmore tone, straight out of the box. No problem. Mine did improve significantly with an Antiquity Texas Hot in the neck. I had good tone with the Tex Mex, but the Texas Hot is much better.

I think Gilmour choose the EMGs 'cause it was the "flavor of the day" during the 80's and early 90's, a bit like Lace Sensors were in that time.

On the Live 8 show last week (July 2nd), he used his old black Strat, which has Dimarzio FS-1 on it (I think).

The DG20 set is perfect for getting that PULSE tone, where I nailed Shine On intro (4-notes theme riff). But didnt sound like the original recording.

Hey you guys. I'm really looking for that Gilmour tone. Right now I have a 1970's Reissue Strat (recommended by Bjorn at Gilmourish.com) with a Little '59 pickup in the bridge. Is the Little '59 good for a Gilmourish tone? I think it is. Anyways, I play through a Blues Deluxe Amp, not the reissue but the original. I also have a DD3, Big Muff USA, Digitech Whammy, Ibanez Tube Screamer, and plan on getting an Electric Mistress.

Listen to some of my stuff here:

I've only been playing a year so be kind! But I need a better mic, right now I have a crappy RadioShack one. Soon I'll be getting a Shure SM57.

word around the campfire is the main reason he used them was because they were among the few single coils that would stay quiet during the crazy light show Floyd was famous for.

Have you seen the Roger Waters DVD? His guitarist gets a pretty decent semblance using a Yamaha digital amp :saeek:

Yeah, I wasn't expecting it...

I saw that DVD and if you mean Doyle Brabham.......i'm afraid he did a really bad job on trying to play some of Gilmour's solos.....i am not judging his sound (or his strange upside down technique) but the way he played some of the most important solos in rock history (plus he completely MURDERED comfortably numb.....).

On the other hand Snowy White was REALLY good, as always......

Strange cause i have seen him play the blues with B.B King and he used the C.A.R strat with the emgs and without the hiwatts (he used instead a couple of fender bassmans i think) and he had his classic signtaure beautiful tone.......

I am a gilmour fan for many years now and i agree that pickups are not so important for getting the Gilmours sound (yes stock fender single coils can do the job perfectly)...what really matters is the choice of the right effects...... a good clean tube amp........and Dave's hands and musical taste :-)

Re: The Peasant's Guide to Gilmour tone?

It is about the playing, phrasing, feel and a strat that you are comfortable with, wire the bridge single to the middle pickups tone, and use a british voiced drive or distortion for leads, get a good delay with some long settings.
As for the Hiwatt, that one is the sound for alot of things!!!
I could not live very well without the DR201.

This is so true. Unfortunately nothing (and I mean nothing) sounds quite like Hiwatt cranked up, though luckily nothing is as loud either.:scared:
