ok.......it is aliveeeeeeeeeeeeeee.........this damn thing works.......hang on while i scoop my brains off the floor.........wow...i took the back panel off. cleaned and dusted everything off, removed the tubes one at a time and cleaned them off.these are peavey 6l6 tubes.i dont know if they are the originals or it was retubed with peaveys.took a wire brush and some windex to the cab, wire brushed the metal corners and removed 90 percent of the rust..i plugged in a cab.......plugged in the amp, turned the power on,and left it in stand by 15 minuits, took a wiff,no electrical smell of any kind, plugged in a seymour equiped fender showmaster and played a couple licks..your right...tube amps are freaking loud...

im gonna get into it this weekend.run it some with my gnx,run some paired with my other half.gonna be fun as i see if i can dial in some vintage heavy rock riffage, with my g.n.x.

Rock & Roll!!!

Yeah, they're loud things... 120 tube watts is nothing to sneeze at. That's why SY uses 'em for stage amps. Really displaces some air.

Spread the cabs out as far as you can get 'em & hit some stereo delay patches... fun stuff!

The PV tubes might be old american glass... they've never made their own tubes. I have some PV branded EL34's here made by phillips that were salvaged from an old head that passed through. If they're newer they're likely Chinese... get a clear pic of any markings on them (the guts too) & we should be able to tell what they are.

Re: the peavey rockmaster works like a champ.

Too funny... we posted at the same time.

Those are phillips 6L6's. Great tubes. They should last for a long while as long as you don't abuse 'em. Let the amp warm up for a couple 5 minutes each time you use it and they'll probably keeping going for at least several years. Most likely those are original to the amp, or a replacement from the same era.

Chances are something else will blow up before the tubes will...

Re: the peavey rockmaster works like a champ.

that first pic above where,i am holding a tube?the peavey logo is visble,i will try to get some better ones, the problem is ,the printing is done in gray.

Re: the peavey rockmaster works like a champ.

the top of the tubes, inside the bottle, have this silvery ,chrome like discoloration, what is that? its clearly visible in the pics.

That's mercury. The poisonous stuff... makes the tubes work.

Here's another tip... if you ever see a tube that has a milky white substance inside it, usually around the base (pins) that's a sign the glass has cracked and the vacuum has been compromised. At that point the tube is junk.

Do a lil research, that's not mercury. That is evaporated bits of the getter that absorbed leftover gasses in the tube, and insure a good vacuum.

Re: the peavey rockmaster works like a champ.

Sweet, that thing looks like a monster and in good shape too. Enjoy it!

Re: the peavey rockmaster works like a champ.

That silvery stuff is called "getter flash" and it's completely normal in most tubes. It's a good sign when it's silver colored. It's very bad when that stuff turns kind of milky white and is no longer completely opaque (it becomes see through). I had some chinese KT66's that did that as soon as I fired them up in my Edana.

Congrats on the working amp! It looks pretty sharp now. Can't wait until you run her through her paces and see what she's made of. I'll bet you will make a deposit in your pants when you really get her up loud with all the knobs turned "just right".

Re: the peavey rockmaster works like a champ.

That's what I thought they were called...getter's. Some of the NOS tube guys talk about old tubes like Mullards and such with "double getter's. I don't know if being double makes them better, but it must do something if they talk about it. They are the sign of a good seal on the vaccum.

Re: the peavey rockmaster works like a champ.

That amp would run four 16 ohm Marshall style cabs. You'd gang two together to make a pair (in parallel), make another pair, and then when you plug them in, they'd give the amp 4 ohms, but you'd be running 16 speakers. Just a thought...:headbang:

This should tell ya all you need to know for the most part. There was a video I watched at some point that explained all this in detail as well as showed tubes being built. I can't remember where that vid was, but it was killer.

Re: the peavey rockmaster works like a champ.

I don't know what a g.n.x. is, but i suspect it might be some kind of multi-effects unit. May i suggest just playing a guitar straight into the amp for a while to start with, to really get to know what the amp can do ? (I have often seen people run multi-effects units into big amps and they have so much boost coming from the multi-fx that they never get to turn the amp up and get any real amp contribution to the sound. Not to mention that the amp's dynamics are often compromised by heavy-handed effects settings).

Use a clean sound and listen to what the tone controls can do to see how they shape the overall tonality, then experiment with the various ways of dialling in overdrive, then listen to how the eq works on the driven sounds. That way, you will understand the core sounds and funtionality of the amp. When you have an understanding of that, start to introduce your effects one by one and listen to how they interact with the amp and various settings. Make the effects serve the amp, not the other way around.

The real beauty of valve amps is finding the sweet spots where the cleans are fat and warm and rich sounding and by digging in a little harder and/or using the guitar's controls, the sound starts to become more aggressive, with some bite. Touch sensitive and dynamic. From there, you will probably find that you don't need as much drive from overdrive and distortion pedals as you might think .... in fact too much tends to compress the signal and negate some of the beauty of the tube amp's fabulous qualities. That's another reason to get to know the amp with just a guitar and cable to begin with. Enjoy the process .... the rewards will be well worth it.

Re: the peavey rockmaster works like a champ.

+1 to Crusty Philtrum. Very sage advice for any new amp owner. Especially tube amps. I wouldn't let the effects anywhere near the amp until after I have given it a thorough run down on it's own first.

Gotta treat a tube amp like a lady. Don't go shoving your hand up her skirt before you know her name if you have any intention of having anything meaningful with her. You've got to get to know her first. Know her as she is without makeup on or fancy clothes. Then you can learn about what makes her cry or scream when you send shivers up her spine. Then you can dress her up and take her out on the town with Chorus and overdrives etc.
