THE Plexi Tone?

I realize that this is the wrong time to ask, but now that I have ordered my Plexi variation, what exact sounds should I expect from it? I am sure it will do VH stuff, but I got the amp for more modern jazz and jam band type of stuff, like full rich but still smooth singing lead tones...I want lots of articulation, hopefully my amp will sound like Rid's plexitone clips?

What shoulds I expect from a Plexi circuit, 2 6l6s, 3 preamp tubes?

Re: THE Plexi Tone?

Scott's right, but that's not a bad thing either. EL-34's = crunchy mids. 6L6's = big bottom and glassy highs. I think your amp will sound great, but it'll be loud and cleanish. If it overdrives, it won't be singing gain, but it'll be a nice fat platform for using OD pedals.

Re: THE Plexi Tone?

I think you'll be better off if you ask the guy to use Groove Tube KT66HP tubes instead of the 6L6's. It's a minor switch for him, but that way you'll have all the creamy goodness of a JTM45, as it's supposed to sound. You can always go with EL34's later.

Is he using a solid state rectifier or a tube rectifier?

Re: THE Plexi Tone?

Thanks for the reply Scott F! He already ordered the 6l6s, but I can easily replace the tubes once I get it...And I trust your ear, I will pick up some GT KT66HP's in not too long.

I emailed him regarding the rectifier and I am sure he will reply soon.

THANKS!:beerchug:

Re: THE Plexi Tone?

Yep, 5AR4 rectifier and KT66HP and you've got a JTM45 (which is a KILLER amp)

Then again, your ears might prefer the 6L6's.

Re: THE Plexi Tone?

Plus it has a master volume and reverb (both were custom options), so it is gonna be a cool unique amp...Cant wait...

Re: THE Plexi Tone?

How is he doing reverb and preserving the "plexi" circuit with only 3 preamp tubes?

Re: THE Plexi Tone?

JTM45 amps have more bite and sound wayyyy sweeter - will not have the 100watt Rudeness of VH. More like early ANGUS or BB Eric Clapton are good references.

I can tell you this, even a 50 watt Marshall is not as RUDE as a 100 watt EL34 bad boy!
