generally 80s thrash

I've also tried the dunlop Tortex Jazz and while they're great little picks, they're too little.

I've also used the Delrins before but the smooth surface made them impossible for me to hang on to. That's why I love the Gators.

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

I used to use Dunlop 1.0mm Sharp, but now I use the regular 1.0mm Dunlops (rounded edge) to get less staccato...

Probably a phase, I just got a 335...wanting to smooth out everything

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

I use ULTEX JAZZ III and Acethal small treardropps...I used to play with Ibanez heavy teardropps ,but are not available here anymore!Gotta try some Clayton..

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

I've been using purple Dunlop Tortex 1.14mm since 1990. I can never use thin picks. For me, thicker picks requires less effort and transfers more energy to the strings because of minimal flex resulting in more volume without having to play like you're trying to kill your guitar. Fast strumming, alternate, sweep, arpeggios are no problem. I don't need a thin flexible pick to do all of these. Thin picks to me produces a "thin" tone. Also the Tortex 1.14mm feels great and comfortable. I play metal, hard rock & blues.

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

+1 to the black Dunlop Jazz III's - I love them because they're small enough to be out of the way, but sharp enough for a clear and precise attack.

I play prog and metal (DT is my fav band), as well as modern rock worship music in my local church's band. I still revisit a lot of 80's metal licks though, that's where it all started for me. I just try to take it forward through my other influences and actually make music with it now. :)

Whenever I use "regular, full-size" picks now, they feel weird to me...

I suck with regular picks now... I have to make sure to bring the Jazz IIIs to guitar stores to keep from embarassing myself.

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

I normally use Dunlop Tortex Greens, although I use Yellows and Purples from time to time.

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

V-Pick small pointy... best kept secret in picks. Replaced all my Jazz III's. I'll only pull a Jazz III to play acoustic or something. The "plunk" from a v-pick is a little too much for it.

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

I've noticed that while I'm playing I'll rotate the pick for different feels. For solos I tend to use the point end, sometimes while strumming I'll use the "long side" across the strings, for a mellower feel I'll use the rounded corners. Also, I'll brace the pick against my index finger and hit the string with my fingernail...it just depends on the tune. I don't like the way the larger triangles or the smaller, pointier picks feel when I'm holding them...so I tend to use the isosceles triangle shaped picks and rotate for a slightly different affectation on my picking. I keep a couple picks in the "coin pocket" of my jeans, no picks lying around or taped to anything. If I drop one it's just a quick dip in the pocket for a replacement and back in business.

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

Ive been using Jazz IIIs for 3 or more years now. Never used anything else since then. They sound great and fit me pretty well, but Ive been having playability issues more than anything. I have to hold onto them tighter and my finger is bent to **** because of it. I also seem to have problems with really fast PM rhythms lately. Not sure why.. I guess because it doesnt give any and the string really displaces a lot which decreases accuracy. Just never done anything about it.

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

I play heavy stoner blues and they're all picks to me.

i bought these green dunlops. they're green so they sound good.

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

+1 for the http://www.v-picks.com

They are great. I used ivory picks made from old piano keys for years... and still like them but they are expensive, hard to find, inconsistent, and they break. The v-picks were getting a lot of buzz on the gear page and they were giving out free samples at NAMM so I picked one up, not expecting much. I was surprised! The v-picks are great - they sound great and feel wonderful to me. The thing that really surprised me is how different the sound is with a different bevel. Check them out.

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

I've used Dunlop Jazz IIIs for quite some time now but the attack with them always was alittle smooth and mellow because they are made out of nylon. Now i'm using Ultex Jazz IIIs. Same shape as the regular Jazz III but the ultex material gives a more punchy, bright, clear and lively tone. And the feel is a little more snappy. I love them.

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

i use an ebony pick by Dugain for most stuff, it's about 1.0mm at the tip but the main body of it has got to be about 4.0mm! I've got a mother of pearl pick from somewhere that seems to be better for more distorted or technical stuff.
The ebony one is really warm sounding and i mostly play blues and modern indie style rock

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

Dunlop Gator Grip 1,5mm, big Stubby 3.0mm, Jazz II or those little Stubby 2.0 mms.

And I love the Brain picks by Snarling Dogs. Ironically enough, I used to call them "Cat's Tongue" picks because the grip on them feels like a cat's tongue. They're a bit too pricey for as often as I go through picks.

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

Orange Dunlop Torlex, .60 I think the guage is works best overall for me

I've got a few dozen of the green and yellow and purple ones laying around as well though once you start using the lighter ones its hard to switch back to the 1+mm stuff as it just feels so stiff and hard to strum with

Re: The Pursuit of Tone: Picks

For the last five years I have just picked up the blue tortex stuff, I've not tried anything else, there might be something I'd like better, but I can't really be arsed faffing about.
