Re: The rebuilt of Washburn XB-100

I already answered your question in the other forum room.

Quick recap: SPB-3 QP, SPB-1 Vintage P or the Steve Harris signature model.

Re: The rebuilt of Washburn XB-100

Looks cool and the carbon top is an intersting feature. :)

But somehoow I can`t get this feeling out of my head that you kind of turned an XB-100 into an XB-4 minus active electronics, and the luthier in me is not so sure how much he likes that idea, simply because the XB-4 is a "cheaper" instrument... My head keeps telling me it`s kind of like turning a LP Standard into a LP Special by routing away the top, even though I know that`s not the case or even remotely comparable....dunno, probably just me.

Re: The rebuilt of Washburn XB-100

hmmm, Zerberus - guite interesting point.
you only need to take into consideration that Washburn xb-4 has a different neck pickup.
I would rather take an Washburn XB-102 to as an example.
The Carbon and Basalt fibres are aplied on the raw body. I can do this for every old guitar for free :)
How I done it.... hmmm... by special resin :) - I am working in composite industry (scientific institute).

Thanks for your opinions about this :) I am glad that it tis interestring for you.
Maybe you can tell me what to add as a neck pickup (some replacement are needed).
Best Regards
Peter (KnifeR).

Re: The rebuilt of Washburn XB-100

Is there a difference between the resin you used for carbon fiber, and the resin used for fiberglass?
Can you make the entire body of carbon fiber, or would this be too costly?

I'm curious about this. Many years ago, I was in a recording session, where I played the Steinberger bass serial #0009.
The engineer was the nephew of the man who invented the original model. I was told that Mr. Steinberger built it himself.

Re: The rebuilt of Washburn XB-100

hmm,
Ginormous, Carbon fibre cost is pretty higher that glass.
Yes - I am wondering of building whole guitar from glass fibres (or basalt fibres). I the future I will do this for sure!
BUT carbon?
hmmm - the fibres I am using are really expensive! The point is there are not common fibres and there are specially produced (high modulus 2D textile).
One layer was enough for me.

Resin,
It is a tricky thing. You have 3 components:
-Resin - main component
-Hardener
-Catalysator or Accelerator

Mostly the mixture of those three is the thing.
But I would say If you use the resin for GF (glass fibres), And you whana only get the look. It will work.

Back to the building of whole guitar from composites.
Wood is alive, lives just and give you the sound. To receive this what wood gives you using composites you need to do a lot of measurments.
Maybe in the future I will do this... In further future:)

Thanks for all question You are really nice :)
