I use the LeGion with a Tube Screamer plugin on leads. I have a JP6 so I'd rather do something different with this one. And I have a Jackson Soloist with an Air Zone and Air Norton which sound awesome through the 800.
What's the basic tone of the guitar, how exactly are the current pickups lacking? That's usually how I determine what I need. I have a bunch of basswood Squier Telecasters here and they were all different sounding, so the usual "pick a Dimarzio" wasn't working. (In fact, one body weighed at least a pound more and was completely tonally dead sounding. ) Usually the Japanese Ibanez RGs were pretty consistent though.
If I had to take a wild guess, I'd say Black Winter or Distortion Set. If you don't use the middle pickup, just remove it and mount an blank cover in the middle, lowering it as much as possible to keep it out of the way.
I just played the guitar through the plugins. It has a decent overall tone. It's actually better than I though but the only thing that bugs me is that is has a lot of presence. It's very fuzzy. Single notes on the bridge or neck sound pretty good but chords on high gain are fuzzy.
I'll do a quick recording of chords and leads and upload it later. Gotta eat my homemade pizza first! lol
Maybe. My other guitars don't sound like that through the plugins.
I haven't tried it through the Marshall since it's all packed away. I have to dig the 4x12 out of the closet. That's next though. I'll compare the JP and Jackson to this axe through the 800 and see what's up.
Yeah, it's not too bad. The single note stuff is pretty good. The middle pickup is no good though. There's some clean playing near the end and I go through the 5 positions. The middle has very low output.
yeah, keep the neck then. refret. Edge is an awesome trem. only thing Id consider a "step up" would be an original floyd. Get a new arm and the edge has replacement bushings for when the stockers get worn. Pup could be about anything. In my RG570, Ive been running a PATB3 (super thick, meaty tone) a dimarzio VV blues in the mid and a 59b in the neck. bet lots of tones out of that combo
I like this suggestion. The PATB3 is the Blues Trembucker, not the Distortion Trembucker if I remember right. I have the Blues Trembucker in a couple of alder body guitars and it is indeed a meaty, chunky sounding bridge pickup in those guitars.
I know the question was "what Duncans would you put in it?" but I wonder how the Blues Trembucker would sound with a PAF Joe in the neck position. I've got one in one of my guitars and it's a super clean yet warm sounding pickup.
And if you want the option of a thick, warm sound too, put an Air Norton S in the middle position.
Of course, I have found the Air Norton S to sound better with a 250K ohm volume control.
I've been using Dimarzio for decades. When I bought my first guitar in 1987, the Charvel, I put Duncans. A Custom in the Bridge and Full Shred in the neck. I liked it back then but I don't remember what it sounded like and I didn't have the Marshall.
I'm just trying to go for something new and different. I did used to mix pickups back in the day. For a while this guitar had the Al Di Meola in the bridge and a JB in the neck and it worked with my Carvin.
