The screamin demon full review (very single coil like)

Re: The screamin demon full review (very single coil like)

Is a SD an unwound C5?
For tighter bass (more growl) and bell like (P-90) highs try all hex screws under the wound strings and all flat head screws under the plain stings. The stings sound more uniform to me with less change between the plain and wound strings. My current favorite in a PRS-EG.

that's so weird, i don't shred and i pretty much hate George Lynch (i mean i'm sure he's a nice guy but i can't deal with his music) it sounds like the humbucker of my dreams

maybe i should get a Charvel or something

Not at all, even if they use the same tension & wind pattern, underwinding by that much really changes the pickup's behavior. Wind up with more of the coil in the inner part of the magnetic field, without the outer coils warming it up. Brighter, more percussive attack. Then throw in the polepiece changes...

Frequently recommended mod, along with the similar hexed lows mod (which I'm using on a neck JB with A3 magnet. :eyecrazy: ).

The demon is the only pup i have no interest in modding i really like this one stock and that says something to me!
I usually want to mod a pup right away but i like it as is.

I don't shred either and I've never listened to anything by George Lynch. Nothing at all.

I bought it because of it's description and some of the feedback I found here about it.

Nails my voice perfectly. It's like a single coil within a humbucker, with the best aspects of both.
Try it out man, I'm sure you'll like it.

And give it a shot in many guitars, it's even more picky than my JB and that's saying something.

this pu is not really a george lynch tone in a box. i think many overlook the demon because of its name and they think it is a shredder pu.
it is really a underwound Custom-5:14:

Let's not start any rumours. It's not. Plain and simple. It's nothing like a Custom 5, other than it has an Alnico V magnet.

and uses the same awg 43 wire. no you are right, it is not a custom 5 but then again the C5 is not a "bigger" 59 either. I dont find the C5 to sound anything like a 59 even though it is compared to it. the demon is much closer to a 59 bridge.

The C5 is closer to sounding like an overwound '59 than the Demon is. More treble in the C5, a little more bass. It's got a similar EQ curve to a '59 from my experience. The Demon is clearer than both to me. Just seems to have more of an authoritative punch to it. At least in my setup it does.

the RP of the demon is one of the things that intrigued me to get one. definitely one of the clearest buckers i ever tried other than the jazz.
The demon made me realize just how anal i was being with things, swap this magnet, change that polepiece, for the first time i installed a pu and didnt have the urge or NEED to mod anything about it. bout time is all i can say.
now i am playing more and not being anal about my tone.

by that logic, the distortion neck model (with an A5 mag) would be the "underwound" custom 5
get one and swap their magnets
it's good

Re: The screamin demon full review (very single coil like)

I can't remember the last time I swapped a magnet. I know what I like and get that and wire it up how I like. Too much fiddling and not enough playing. Been there myself, only with just plain swapping and also messing with pedals. Nice thing about it all is that I know my gear and how it's wired and configured, except for pedals I haven't modded.

I was just practicing for our show tomorrow night through the rig I'll be using and man, I love how my frankenstrat with the Demon in it sounds. Just huge. I holds its own against my buddy's rig and his Les Paul Trad Pro with ease.

Re: The screamin demon full review (very single coil like)

The first time I heard a Demon was in a mahogany Flying V. Sounded amazing. I tend to have trouble with them in locking trem guitars. Seymour describes it as "having a unique airy sound." And that's the problem: in locking trem guitars it feels like there's no punch to it. But again, I LOVE it in set-neck guitars. YMMV

was your trem set to float or to dive only?
I ask because i have all my floyd's resting against the body and the punch is plentiful with the demon in my trem guitars.
The demon has a real nice tyson punch to it

The demon is the only pup i have no interest in modding i really like this one stock and that says something to me!
I usually want to mod a pup right away but i like it as is.

Ed my attitude to this pickup is completely different:
I tried it in a Les Paul and found it quite okay. Airy, clean, accurate, hearing every single twist of the fingers. Great but not the sound i look for in a Les Paul. Warmer, fuller, growly more ZZ Top and Led Zep.
In a strat (hard tail, maple, alder) it became worse: thinner and piering, but i like the overall sound. To get rid of the shrieking highs i did the hex mod leaving 3 hexes on the low strings and after that i swapped in a A8.
This is my heaviest modded pickup so to say. And now its a keeper in this strat.

BTW: i love the parallel sound of the coils i quite nice imitation of the in-between positions of a stock strat.

I consider myself lucky because many such as yourself have not had the best of luck with the demon. I was surprised it worked out for me to be honest, i was very skeptical going in with the demon. but now after a week of playing it in various situations i know it is a keeper.

Re: The screamin demon full review (very single coil like)

One last thing about the screamin demon then i am going to STFU.
This was the first pu i ever used, that made me realize that your technique and approach are far more IMPORTANT that any F**kin pu ever could be!
I am playing more than ever now and hearing things that need improving on in my playing, this thing is great at showing you how much you really do suck on guitar!
If you think your real good then try playing a demon with a low gain plexi and prepare to hear things in your playing you did not before!
