I am your doctor of love!
This is it - the SUPERBOWL of Guitar Pron !!!!!

Two axes enter, One Axe Leaves (for those whose prefer it to be the Thunderdome of guitar pron) !!!!!

Actually, a lot of axes have entered, and now it is down to the final two. There were 20 entry polls of easily 30+ guitars each. So 600 or more started this journey back whenever this summer. From each of those entry polls, 10 fine specimens were selected to represent in each category poll. So 200 battled for a spot in the playoffs. Of those 20 category winners, it was narrowed down to a final 4, then the two finalist polls, and now, the Championship round. All so you could get your daily/weekly dose of guitar awesome.

And as I ALWAYS say - there are NO losers. Every guitar in those 200 was absolutely drool worthy. Some were just a little more awesome than the others. But now, it is time to DECIDE!

In this year's Ultimate Axe competition, we have Burst vs Burst. And two extremely awesome guitars they are indeed!!!

In one corner we have a brand new (so new it had a label on the pick guard) Gibson. A re-issue of a vintage 1959 Les Paul Standard. It is in a rare Lemon burst, and look at that flame. You need oven mitts just to pick it up! This is about as fine an example of the breed as you can imagine. But it is not a case-queen. This guitar has been gigged and rocked hard.

In the other corner, weighing in at even more than the Les Paul, we have an original 1977 Hamer Standard. Look at that massive slab back. Not a reissue, this is the real deal vintage. This is a rock warrior that has been there, seen it, and rocked it for over 30 years. This one goes by the name "Whackhead" and its top is not exactly plain either.

The winner will be decided by 7pm this Saturday. Gentlemen, good luck!

[SDUG is not responsible for any damage to one's mind for trying to decide which of these is really the Ultimate SDUG axe]

Don't underestimate the power of vintage mojo or Hamer....

5 days is a long time.

One of those fine guitars will be joining the last winner:

Re: The SDUG ULTIMATE AXE CHAMPIONSHIP !!!!!

I am honored that my old guitar has gotten this far. Kind of funny two old boys from the same hometown, Columbus, Ohio are going at it. Well, yeah, I don't live there now but.... :headbang:

Lil info on Whackhead. It got it's name after I bought it and named it based on it's now 30+ year old headstock repair. I'm 2nd owner and I have had it since 2001. I put a Duncan 59er in the neck slot and it came with the Super Distortion in the bridge slot. It has phase switching that I had redone when I added the neck pup. It's a Rawker. 4 numbers before Rick Nielsen's Mandocello that has the same looking top and finish. The Grover tuners that are on it are Treble side tuners from two 3x3 sets of tuners. Paul Hamer told me it could have been ordered that way or were "what we had at the time." I never asked the original owner as I spent very little time talking to him as I wanted to seal the deal and get the guitar home. It was literally 8 hours from the time I saw the ad for the guitar and it was home. :onder:

Re: The SDUG ULTIMATE AXE CHAMPIONSHIP !!!!!

The Hamer. Even though I am not a huge fan of cherry sunbursts, the flame on that Les Paul is just too far over the top for me. They're both beauties, though.

Re: The SDUG ULTIMATE AXE CHAMPIONSHIP !!!!!

R9s' are a dime a dozen, plenty of them around.
It's a beautiful guitar. Very desirable.
Not manyearly Hamer Standards around and NO more will be made.
Easy decision. Hamer all the way

Re: The SDUG ULTIMATE AXE CHAMPIONSHIP !!!!!

Whackhead FTW. Believe it or not, it's not even my favorite in BTMN's stable.

Re: The SDUG ULTIMATE AXE CHAMPIONSHIP !!!!!

Another one for Whackhead. For so many reasons- not the least of which are: that cherry sunburst is awesome, Hamer Standards are the shizznits and a hockey stick head stocks rules. Hamer FTW!

Re: The SDUG ULTIMATE AXE CHAMPIONSHIP !!!!!

Hamer. That shape is one of the best of all time, the top is gorgeous, and as a Hamer player myself, I can't shy away from the name on the head.

That's pretty funny indeed! I don't think I knew that factoid, or I forgot! Anyway, funny!

Re: The SDUG ULTIMATE AXE CHAMPIONSHIP !!!!!

That R-9 is a stunner and that is the best top I have seen on a Paul in a WHILE! But in the end it's just another pretty Les Paul and nothing really that special.
However those old Hamers are absolute killers and there will be no more like that ever. I know them well as I worked for a Hamer dealer in the 1980's.
For me it's no contest the Standard!!

Re: The SDUG ULTIMATE AXE CHAMPIONSHIP !!!!!

Both AWESOME and droolworthy and I have to go with the one I'd want to play out day after day..... it's the MetlBurst R9 for me!

It's The Big One Elizabeth......
