Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

Here's what the OP had to say in post #72 of his own current thread 'Ea$y to Sound badass with gain and compression' ........

" Nothing wrong with a 335, Great guitar despite my sensationalism..just make sure you know that there are different higher grade Gibson Semi-Hollows..some people don't even know that.
I really need a break from this place. One person drumming up the same tired crap all the time gets on peoples nerves , I'm sure. I'm just bored/don't have areal life...and I'm addicted to this forum- its so cool. "

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

It's always been the ES-345 that did it for me.

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

Maple (plywood) = laminated maple

It also has a solid maple center block

So, even Gibson states that it is made from “laminated maple” and calls it plywood.

HOWEVER! Here is some information that MetalNut did not know about

Modern plywood was invented by Immanuel Nobel, father of Alfred Nobel. Nobel realized that several thinner layers of wood bonded together would be stronger than one single thick layer of wood.

Gretsch White Falcon is also made of laminated maple.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that I'm the first person, ever, to pick up one of these and play doom riffs through a Marshall:

It was ****ing badass by the way.

Feedback is kwwaaayyzee
That guitar made me mess my pants.

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

Those that know me know that I have guitar ADD and flip them left and right. A few have survived though because they are that nice. So of all the quality guitars that come and go, I hang onto this one..........I wonder why?

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

I know a bloke who filled his with dacron to stop the feedback, sounded pretty good and didn't kill the tone.

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

I don't know if this qualifies. I saw Jerry Cantrell's G&L guitar and thought 'that looks like one of those $99 Walmart guitars', here's the proof. I know the $2,000 G&L has better stuff but it looks like a 'my 1st guitar'.

DON"T SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT JERRY CANTRELL"S GUITAR. jk
:haha:
Those did look pretty similar which I thought was funny. Jerry (Cantrell, not MetalManiac) doesn't really care about features though, just what he plays. Pretty much the exact opposite of Brian May's guitar, but I love both for some reason. Love both of their playing and their gear.

The Gibson ES-335!

Just becasue Black Blues players finanlly wrere able to afford an entry level Gibson Semi Hollow, and made that guitar sound famous, the squadrons of no-nothing guitar dorks like you guys chime in harmony like a bunch of Bullfrogs in the Mud with an adulating chorus; "335!"
What they don't know is the 335 is a Plywood guitar, thats right, PLYWOOD!
On top of that, its a cheap glued top.
I really hate to say this, cause I know so much more about Gibsons than you'll ever know, but there are models not that much more expensive that are one solid piece of carved mahogany...in fact, the whole great guitar is one solid piece of wood, and the semi hollow chambers are carved out of that solid block!
I hate to say that cause now some heretofore clueless self important boneheads with money here will now go researching and looking for these guitars that I am trying to find, but ah well, all in the name of progress.
Basically its like people arguing that silverface Fender is a good amp.
No it sin't.

Great minds always face criticism from mediocre minds, like I always do here, so flame away again! I'm sitting pretty knowing I'm right..I'm ALWAYS right!

If it sounds good..whats the problem?

And your point is ... what???:banghead::banghead::banghead:

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

I went to a concert this weekend. 4 bands all great two of the bands guitar players were playing 335's. They both sounded awesome! One guy was playing through a Plexi, the other through a SF Pro Reverb. The Pro Reverb & the 335 was a killer combo!

+1. Clapton with a 335 thru a Plexi in his Cream days was some great tones.

Feeding the troll with a Gibson ES-335 Lucille-based on B.B. King's guitars, which he calls "Lucille" to remind himself of running into a burning building after one of his guitars after a fight broke out over a girl of the same name.

Well... Clapton's 335 works just as well through a Fender amp:

If I'll ever buy another humbucker equipped guitar it would be a 335 style one. Yeah, with Plywooooood...

Re: The Single Most Overrated Guitar of All Time

The 335 was first introduced in 1958. The # 335 was associated with the asking price of $335.00. By no means in 1958 would I consider 335 dollars an entry level guitar. That was about a months salary for a laborer. So going back to your original statement That "Just becasue Black Blues players finanlly wrere able to afford an entry level Gibson Semi Hollow, and made that guitar sound famous, the squadrons of no-nothing guitar dorks like you guys chime in harmony like a bunch of Bullfrogs in the Mud with an adulating chorus; "335!"

This holds no relevant information. The 335 cost $335.00 in 1958! That is anything but entry level. "Black" players usually played Silvertones or Harmony guitars because they could afford them. 335's were made for pros.

Always wanted one of those. I wonder how MUCH the solid top actually reduces feedback vs f holes. Anybody know?
