The Slug

Anyone have any experience with The Slug? Looks pretty insane on the output side. I love the Dimebucker and while it is a high output pickup it is great for softer styles than metal. Was wondering if it would be the same for the Slug.

Re: The Slug

Resistance does not always equal output. If this really had 3 times as much output as the most high output pickups around, it'd be unusable. :D

Re: The Slug

It seems like overkill, but someone bought one lol. It could be cool if I had a guitar I wanted to make ridiculous, but unfortunatly no such luck

Haha! Excellent point! :smash:

I love rail pickups and this pickup was in the advertisement at the top of Yelp which is even more intriguing. lol But it appears to be an insane/hot rodded Dimebucker–double ceramic bars with thick blades (as opposed to thin blades on the Dimebucker.)

Would definitely like to give it a try just nervous forking over $130 bucks for it. lol

Those aren't blades, they're magnets, and iirc, there is no magnet underneath like a typical humbucker.

Re: The Slug

It is a very cool, very authoritative pickup. It will make you start playing black sabbath riffs.

Authoritative is a good word, what I was hoping it would sound like. I really dig the video on SD's site.

Thought the item description said rails but I was confusing it with the Dimebucker. Looks like the description doesn't actually say but judging by the El Diablo's description, "super hot wind, Alnico 2 blade magnets", I'd say you are correct that the magnets are the blades and there is not a magnet underneath.

I'd say all three (Dimebucker, The Slug and El Diablo) seem like awesome pickups. I love the Dimebucker and currently have some Bill Lawrence 500's waiting to go into a project...would love to try these other rail type pickups (even if its not a rail in the sense of the Dimebucker or Hot Rails.)

Re: The Slug

I was thinking about getting the Slug for one of my guitars with probably a Distortion Neck. It would most likely punch my Marshall in the face!

There are definitely ceramic magnets in the middle of the bobbin instead of rails. If I understand correctly these would be sort of akin to firebird pickups in cnstruction. They are very different sounding than the el diablo or l500xl. (I own all of the above.)

The slug neck pickup is a good match for it as well. I like the Slug a lot. I own a few.

I hope I didn't come across as assuming they sounded the same, I am just intrigued by the rail design, all I've used produced incredible harmonics.

They make a Slug neck pickup? I only see bridge as an option in the custom shop.

I did not know they make a Slug neck pickup either. Is it a Custom Shop as well and you just have to specify?

Yes, I have one of those. You do have to specify with the custom shop. Mine was $130. This is what the guitar with both slugs in it looks.

Re: The Slug

Actually the neck is a Warmoth Canary neck with canary board and azurite/malachite inlays. Ash body is a warmoth with a woodburned celtic cross I put in there. Finish is clear nitro.

Shows you what I know! lol

Warmoth has it listed as bright like Maple...how does it compare to you? I take it the tone is not too bright or is it a good match because these pickups are on the darker tone side?

These pickups are not over bright. They are on the darker end of the tonal spectrum, but with sufficient highs. I would say it is kind of a unique pickup. I would say it is darker, but has fully sufficient highs, unlike say, an invader. Somehow it vaguely reminds me a touch of a darker p90. That is by NO means a perfect comparison. A lot of pickups that have a low-mid focus sound wooly or woofy and lack cut. These are low mid pickups that can still cut. They sound absolutely massive. Clean they don't jangle, they thump and hit you in the chest.

I love the look and feel of canary. It seems a hair warmer than maple/ebony to me. (I have directly swapped a couple canary for ebony/maple necks) It takes an excellent burnishing and can be played raw, with the bare wood polished to a satin sheen.

They sound like awesome pickups! Thanks for the info, I really like the idea of darker sounding pickup that cuts through.

And I will look into Canary because being on the Warmer end of Maple sounds like it would be a great replacement for a Maple board guitar that is too bright.

Re: The Slug

Do they have an output that can be compared to other models? I'm maybe getting new PRS soon and was thinking an alt8 for the bridge, but if this thing is actually as dope as it seems I may reconsider...

Re: The Slug

The Custom Shop can make a SLUG neck pickup on request, but the Black Winter neck works really well for it giving you lots of versatility, clear leads and nice cleans.

Re: The Slug

I suppose my question is not related to neck pickups but more about output overall. Would this be useful in anything besides the brutalest of metal? It seems really cool but if I can't use it I'd probably opt for an Alt-8 or Crazy 8 or something in the high output but multi-genera range
