The super distortion: New vs old?

Re: The super distortion: New vs old?

Very interesting, Us-Axes! Thanks for sharing this slice of history with the forum. :)

Re: The super distortion: New vs old?

I have tried an older one (late 70s?) and a production model from 07 or something. They were both in Explorers... The newer one just sounded a little hotter but they were (like orpheo said) both undeniably a sd.

Height adjustment and string type/gauge alone could account for that

Re: The super distortion: New vs old?

As far as I can tell from the three I have owned, one new a few years ago, one about as old as they get, and one in between, they sounded as much alike/different as any three individual pickups can. I certainly did not think the oldest was the warmest or somewhere better.

Re: The super distortion: New vs old?

Old thread but still interesting. I had an original 'SD Distortion' in a home built guitar back in the 70's. The neck was mahogany and the body was oak. A super combo. That guitar was soooo sweet sounding. A few years later I put the pickup in an original Charvell with a maple neck, mahogany body with a flame maple top. The sweetness was gone and I gained more upper mids. Not a huge difference but noticeable. Same pickup, different guitar, makes for more difference than people think.

I have 2 'SD Distortions'. One from the 70's and one from the 90's. No noticeable difference in tone. Newer than that, I don't know about but I'm betting there is no noticeable difference either.

I don’t know enough about pickups to really chime in. I just wanted to say, though, i have a super distortion 7 in my ibanez s series and it stands out as my fav bridge pup.

I got one last year. I really don't care about the vintage VS new thing. I really think that with proper setup and amp EQ, you can really ROCK WITH IT! You don't have an idea how much I nailed KISS tone in my Flying V guitar. I felt so powerful, so iconic.... Just tweak your amp knobs, and save your settings!

Out of curiosity, as someone who likes that gnarly, biting, and cutting rectifier sound, will I prefer the OG or the new DD?
