The Tweed Pro is FINALLY complete!

Eureka!

Weber finally got me the JBL D130F 15" speaker. I've got the rig up and running. Just need to change out the NFB resistor from 56k to 100k according to Bruce (because I went from running the 4 ohm output to running the 8 ohm output).

Finally. It's about freaking time. I've been waiting on this speaker for TWO FREAKING MONTHS! I might be done with Weber for a while. Promising me delivery 3 seperate times over the two month period and never delivering is uncalled for.

But that speaker sounds pretty damn good!

Re: The Tweed Pro is FINALLY complete!

Scott,

I am glad that speaker finally arrived. I bet that setup does sound amazing!!! I am sifteing through reviews on speakers to upgrade the stock Eminence in my HRDx. I was considering 2 different Weber models among others, but once I pay for my speaker, I WANT IT!!!! That may exclude Weber from the mix. Was that a special speaker ordered drectly from Weber, or did you use a wholesale, etc?

Re: The Tweed Pro is FINALLY complete!

I'll always wonder why there aren't more 15" speakers on guitar amps. My dream cab is a 2-12/ 2-15 cab. Forget the 4-12, I want that one!

Re: The Tweed Pro is FINALLY complete!

Yay I have quotes in TWO people's sigs :). I am truly awesome.

Re: The Tweed Pro is FINALLY complete!

I used to set my 2 x12 Twin Reverb on top of a 2 x 15 Showman bottem with JBL's when I gigged in the early 70's around Ann Arbor, Michigan. It wasn't a set up I used for long but it did get a great tone. But I haven't owned any amps or cabs with 15's for ages. Used to love 'em though.

Tell us more about your new amp Scott...are you loving it yet? :)

I had to play around with the tubes a bunch to get it where I wanted it. I ended up going with the TAD 6L6's of course. Did try the JJs and an old tired set of RCAs. Went through several different models of rectifier tubes. Settled on a 5AR4. NOS JAN 12AY7 in V1, an EH 12AY7 in V2, and a Groove Tube 12AX7M in V3. I might try still try an old RCA 12AT7 in V2 at some point.

The speaker is brighter than I had figured. It's an 8 ohm JBL D130F. I just turn down the treble a bit and boost up the bass. At first I thought it was the amp, then I ran the Two Rock head into the 15" speaker and it's definitely the speaker. I guess that's why Bruce had me put tone controls on the amp. I had been thinking of trying the Weber California 15 ceramic in it. I'm guessing I'd have had a larger bass response, but it's not a big deal. The recently reconed JBL needs some hours to break in. I'm well on my way tonight. Pics to follow.

I think he want 4 speakers in the cab, 2x12 up top and a 2x15 down below.

Tell me about the volume, Do you think it is too loud for a flat? (Please, just tell me it's not... :32: )

It is definitely not. If you use the original rectifier tube, I think it's a 5U4G, it's only about a 20 watt amp. I ran several other rectifiers in there and finally settled on the 5AR4 (GZ34). Also, I"m using 6L6WGB. It's plenty loud for me. But not too loud. I put the JJ 6L6GC in there and it had a bigger kick to it. I also have it tamed with the 12AY7 preamp tubes in V1 and V2. That lowers the gain a lot.

Not too loud for a flat. has good cleans at low volume. I think I like the JBL better at low volume so far. It still needs to break in.

Re: The Tweed Pro is FINALLY complete!

Scott,
I don't know about the kit, but the original amps used a 6L6GB.
If the kit's true to the original circuit, then it's probably better to stick with that tube, since the GCs are higher voltage.

Re: The Tweed Pro is FINALLY complete!

Put some fabric softener on the speaker, it will really mellow the brittle highs. Works great, I do it on all my new speakers. Someone tipped me to it and it works.

Re: The Tweed Pro is FINALLY complete!

Yo scott, did i tell you that the guy i bought my 2 jbl d130f's from is letting me keep them for free since both did not work?

All i need to do is recone both now. There's an amp shop by my house that uses weber's reconing kits, and they'll recone both for 230 bucks, so i actually made 70 dollars profit!

So the JBL's are very articulate, and have endless bass response? Very very nice scott! Where's the NFB resistor in a blackface amp? Would i need to change it if i get a new transformer at 8 ohms?

Well, Bruce has modified this circuit slightly for hte better. Added a bias pot, allowed for both 4 and 8 ohm outputs. Tells me that with a rebias, I can run 6L6GCs and a 5AR4 in there! I specifically called him yesterday to ask.

On Thu I had some time on my hands heading for the Denver airport and I was driving through Arvada and I stopped by Bruce's place, but I missed him. Maybe next time. Couldn't ask for better service.

I think it's nice that you'll be getting the frames for free. Weber charged me 172 for the frame, the recone and the shipping if that helps you as far as pricing goes. You ought to check with Jeff Seal to see how much he'd charge on one. Jeff does great work. You'd just have to abosrb some shipping charges.

As far as articulate, yes they are. Endless bass response, not yet. Might be the amp, but I rant he Two rock into the JBL as well and I had to boost the bass response ont eh TR as well to get it right.

Re: The Tweed Pro is FINALLY complete!

well by bass response i mean lack of farting when the bass knob is dimed. I love having a bassy smooth tone for the cleans, but the peavey speakers were always very farty.
