The ultimate high gain amp?

Re: The ultimate high gain amp?

if you can afford it, the mesa triple rect or soldano. if you can't afford it, try a peavey 6505 halfstack for around $1500. you won't believe the tone. the cleans are super good and the distortion is thick and articulate. you can dial-in some intermediate distortion tones too. i don't think anyone can be disappointed except that it doesn't have reverb, big deal. the sound is so good, you probably want to live without it.

You asked for ultimate.....there it is.

great photoshop. Its almost like all those exotic amps are really in your house!

Re: The ultimate high gain amp?

what about pure metal with fenderish cleans?

Engls Engls Engls!!!

The Engl Powerball and the Savage have amazing cleans.

they have the most devastating, Brutal, saturated tone you can imagine, and you are still able to switch to absolute crystal stunning clean.

Re: The ultimate high gain amp?

I dont think Mesa has anything near fenderish cleans

The Road King and Roadster were designed for just that, all out metal and sparkly cleans, with a lot of nice tones in between. They live up to the advertising.

Re: The ultimate high gain amp?

Yeah, +1 on the Mesas if you are into their verson of high gain. (Some are, some aren't)

Re: The ultimate high gain amp?

hey guys what about the ashdown fallen angel (i think thats the name) or the crate blue voodoo? arent those some high gan tube amps..and i believe there at a cheaper price than your marshalls or mesas

Yeah, but you really are getting what you pay for there.

I had a Blue Voodoo 1x12 combo - pretty terrible sounding.

I'm not a big fan of the Ashdowns, either - just not in the same league as something like a Rectifier, Mark IV, or even a 5150.

the voodoo modded crate bv didnt sound as bad..still it has that crinching sound like a solid state crate with gain and treble on 10

the one amp in all the years i never tried i should of is the peavy jsx..i mean i dont even know if he really uses this amp ...hows the distortion and cleans on it?

Engl SE or savage 120. Both have amazing cleans and brutal metal sounds. Powerball cleans are a little sterile imo, that's why i started using a dual amp setup with my Sovereign for the cleans.

Re: The ultimate high gain amp?

wow, you think the Powerball cleans are sterile? even with the bright switch on?

Thats the first time ive ever heard anyone say that.

Mesa Roadster..... fender cleans, marshall crunch, recto gain, sweet reverb, does it all! See my earlier post. It cuts like crazy through a mix (but in a good way). Also, a fair amount cheaper than the Road King; though being able to assign 6l6s OR el34s to each channel is pretty sweet.

While i love my Powerball for Metal tones it gets blown out of the water by my Sovereign. The cleans aren't a s responsive or lively. The PB has very good cleans for such a metal monster amp, but there are better cleans out there.
