KB, there's a Cool Rails stacked humbucker in the neck position (initially I wanted Hot Rails because I love Dave Murray's tone [Maiden], but they weren't in stock.) I'm probably happier with the Cool Rails in the neck because I can still get that smooth tone and it also has decent cleans. The middle pickup is a stock single coil, which I lowered today, and it sounded a bit better mixed in with the humbuckers. In the bridge is a Duncan Distortion. I get a large tonal palette with this configuration.
And it plays and sounds great unplugged too. Pacificas are cheap and great!
Yeah, those pickups are unique to the Nightahwk. The coils are accually staggered in the basepalte. I didn't like them a first, but I dig 'em now. The Nighthawk is kind of Gibson's answer to the Strat. It is kind of a hybrid between a Paul and a Strat. It is built like a Paul (mahogany body, 1/4 maple cap on top) with a thin body profile (like an SG), but it is 25.5" scale with a string-through bridge and five-way switch. The bridge pickup is designed to sound like a Strat bridge when split, that is why it has the angled coils. If you look closely you will see the slugs at the bridge side of the humbucker are larger, like in a Strat single. It is a nice little guitar.
