The Wall of DEATH

King Midas to Cheap Guitars
Sold off most of my distortion pedals, replaced them with amps. Most of the amps cost about the same (and sometimes less!!) than a comparable pedal.

Yup, most of them are solid state. But this guy used solid state amps:

(I do have a Randall combo that I'm in the process of converting to a head. That will come later.)

These guys used the Marshall 8100 that's on the top shelf:

and since I use them all for recording directly, I can shape the tone exactly how I want. Also have a Tom Scholz Power Soak for recording the Valveking and AT-100 tube amps.

Re: The Wall of DEATH

Glad you've found something that works for you. I have something similar, except not quite so many amps.

Maybe you're familiar with the Power Soak and its risks, but you need to be careful with those things. It's not a reactive load like newer attenuators, so it's far more likely to damage a tube amp. A friend of mine blew the OT in his '71 Super Lead while running it through a Power Soak.

Re: The Wall of DEATH

Those look awesome! Congrats man..

A lot of cheaper hi-gain amps sound great to my ears....

Re: The Wall of DEATH

Wild! Could use a rack like that.

For some reason I want to see a Windsor in there somewhere. Cheap, kicks out the jams. I've heard it called a poor man's 800, which would compliment the valvestate.

Wow

It's almost literally every used amp that's sat in the back of my local Sam Ash for 5 years.

Weird....

The Valveking is pretty close to the Windsor, just different power tubes. Since I record direct with Revalver, I can just modify one of the power amps.

Are they charging too much for them? The prices I paid for those amps ranged from $50-$200.

didn't know that.

I guess the hard part is figuring out what amp to use when you have a dozen real ones and another dozen simulated (not a bad problem to have, hehe).

Re: The Wall of DEATH

Very cool, but why having 10 mediocre amps? You could've gotten one 5150, or boogie, or marshall or whatever higher end tube amp

I've owned a 5150, Triaxis, and a JCM2000 in the past. I can make these sound just as good. More expensive does not mean better.

Re: The Wall of DEATH

Where's the Ampeg VH140C man? You could probably replace almost all of those.

Those are *really* overpriced right now. ($400-ish.) I'm holding out for the Crate reissue, which I can probably snag for less than half that.

Marshall Valvestate in action:

Re: The Wall of DEATH

Ha, they come up around here for duuurrrt cheap every once in a while, like $150-ish. You want me to watch out for one?

Re: The Wall of DEATH

What Crate amp did Cannibal Corpse use? and in what album?

Not sure which model, but you can see it here:

They used a Crate GX130.

A Marshall 8100 was my first amp head back in 1997. Without a boost is was pretty flat and sterile sounding. The power switch was always known to break on these amps too. Otherwise it was cool at the time. But I moved on to bigger and badder sound amps. Like the ones listed in my sig.

Ahh. I've been looking at the G130CXL, that's the one that's a reissue of the Ampeg VH-140. The GX900 and GX1200 that I have are no slouches themselves though. I like the GX1200 because it's so small and easy to move around. :D

I always use an overdrive as a boost. Tightens, occasionally brightens, and pushes amps to the extreme. A lot of people say that the Valveking doesn't have enough gain, but all I did was toss a TS or OCD in front and I'm getting death metal out of it. Probably helps most of the other amps as well. :D

Just got in from the garage, took the housing from a combo amp and cut it down to head size. More updates on that one in a few days.
