Re: The Well 8. It's party time with the Collins Brothers!
Now that you've operated an online music store for many years, do you think it's a good business, or do you see it mostly as a supplemental income? What do you think of Ebay stores now, as compared to 5 years ago?
Which types of music items do you think are the easiest to sell or have the best sales?
For me, it's a supplemental income. But I only sell guitar pickups and guitar parts. If I worked harder at it and invested more $$$ into expanding my line, I do believe I could live off of it.
As it is, my Duncan rep told me a few years ago that I was one of the top five Duncan dealers in the world. I don't know if that's still true or not. I doubt it is.
For me, the easiest items to sell are those I'm most enthused about and have the most experience with and which I use or have used myself.
I don't sell much to the heavy metal and heavy rock guys. Probably because I just don't have a lot of personal experience getting that kind of tone.
I stock them, but the Duncan Distortion and Dimebucker and Invader don't sell well at all for me. The Alnico 2 Pro HB's sell great! And the Antiquity Strat and Tele pickups. Although they are great pickups, the Antiquity HB's don't sell particularly well for me. Don't know why. The Seth Lovers do sell very well...and Phat Cats too! Duncan's SSL-1 and SSL-2 don't move very fast for me...which is weird because the Broadcaster Lead and Vintage Tele neck do sell well.
Seems like a lot of Tele players want the vintage 50's tone but Strat players want something smoother and hotter than vintage.
I find that a lot of Strat players are under the impression that SRV used overwound pickups. They want to get SRV's tone but they lack the touch it takes to use the pickups that SRV actually used.
SRV did not use overwound pickups. He used vintage Fender pickups wound like the Surfers or SSL-1's! But if your chops and your touch are not together those pickups sound harsh and to bright. If your chops and touch are together, those pickups don't sound to bright or to harsh at all.
The truth is, a really good player can shape the tone with his or her hands and most players can't do that yet...they're still learning.
