Had any experience with brownface Vibroverbs? -what do you think of them?

Re: The Well 8. It's party time with the Collins Brothers!

My mom was a member of the NAACP and I grew up in a racially mixed neighborhood. My dad was from the south but never used the N word...never. He used to tell us how much he liked black people and also Mexican and Hispanic people...and so do I.

I also love being around Native Americans.

I was very fortunate to grow up in a family that was about as un-racist as a family could be. I was invited to a birthday party when I was 5 or 6 years old where I was the only white kid there and when my friend's mom put a little birthday hat on me and called me "honey" I just felt completely welcome and accepted.

I think I'm a little like Stevie Ray Vaughn in that, like him, I sometimes wish I was black.

I've always felt very comfortable with people of color and to be honest, I think my own race is in near total denial over all the harm we have done to God's beautiful planet Earth and the harm we have done to people of color.

Its your well and that is cool but, check this out. Instead of white this, black that, and Hispanic, Asian, whatever and whatever these days, do you think it should be much more about unity these days? It seems like with all of the issues going on (a ton of them), the races are getting driven further apart everyday. I am all for unity and I personally think things might be better off if everyone would stop trying to get their larger peice of the pie and thus segregating and pigeon holing themselves into a race. We are all humans, we need to get along and not draw lines between races or ethnicities. What do you think bro?

Oh, I had 3 different best friends that were black through different stages of childhood and the teenage years (depending on where we lived) and I had a black fiancee at one point. I have no problems with other races, I just think keeping everyone as this race or that race pushes people further apart. Your views?

After reading 10000's of your posts here I litraly pic you as YODA, until I seen you photo. You sure must be one Big Star Wars fan like my bro and me.

The one thing I want to ask you is what strings do you use?

Re: The Well 8. It's party time with the Collins Brothers!

So you got Nuge and the MC5 on here...any Stooges stories?

Re: The Well 8. It's party time with the Collins Brothers!

1. Do you feel like Ned is getting more Boulder-ish?

2. Is Rock music dead in the Front Range, what with all the Jam band/trippy funk stuff around these days?

3. Can you come across the Peak To Peak to Jamestown this Saturday to see my band, The Set playing at the Mercantile? (sorry for the gig spam...hehe) I've played with Mark Myer, Sheri Scott's former guitarist/SW partner, and would love to have a forum bro come out.

I guess I think we're all Africans if you go back to that one woman in Africa who gave birth to that first Homo sapien that the entire "human" race came from. We all have one great, great, great, great, great, great, great, etc. ...grandmother in common. Lew

I like DAddarios. I use them on my electrics and acoustics. Lew

I'll tell you something funny about Iggy. His dad, who we always called Mr. Osterberg, was our Engish teacher at Fordson High School...which I graduated from in 1967. I used to see Iggy all the time when I lived in Ann Arbor. He used to come into Discount Records all the time and I worked there. He was always friendly and always said "hi" when I'd see him on the street. He has a lot of charisma. Was a very striking and handsome man back in the 60's and early 70's when I "knew" him. I also knew John Sinclair, the MC5's manager fairly well.

A few years after the MC5 broke up, Wayne Kramer came to hear my band play and sit in. He was going to prison the next day and wanted to play a bit before going to jail. Nice guy.

He was a soul man who'd been around a while before the MC5 days. You could tell from his stage moves and the way he used to dance like James Brown: slide around on one foot and all that. Very soulful guy.

1. Not really, although it's cleaned up a lot in the last thirty years. My partner Teresa is trying to get cell phone towers and sidewalks put in and I'm against both. I hate people hearing people yacking on cell phones and I'm fine with no sidewalks.

I want Nederland to stay funky as long as possible...

It seems to me that a lot of folks move up here to get away from Boulder and all the controls and rules and laws and traffic and stop lights and...

2. What's that quote? Something like: "No...rock's not dead. It just smells kinda funny..."

3. Mark's a good friend of mine. He and Trish were back here from the Virgin Islands a month or two ago and we threw a big party and jam at my house. Do you know Rob Galloway? The bass player.

This Saturday we're all supposed to go over to Lyons to Oscar Blues and hear our new bass player who's playing with another band there that night. He also plays with Dotsero.

Otherwise I sure would love to come and hear you guys. If something happens and we don't go to Lyons I'd love to make it.

PM me?

Thanks! Lew

Yeah, sidewalks are not needed there. It would kill the character of the town, not to mention take months to put in. I saw Dr Fix-it at the Great American Taxi show at the Fox the other night and he's running for mayor again. Should be good things to come.
We just got this three piece version of the band together, so this is the first show. I'll for sure let you know about others, and maybe our bands can gig together.

Remember Furious Howard Brown? Their former bass player Ed is with us. Our drummer is Squid from the band Go,Nad,Go! that played around the Front Range a few years ago. Remember either of these two?

Being mayor in Ned is a thankless job. And you know how much the mayor gets paid? Nothing! It's a volunteer position.

I don't know the guys you mentioned, although I know Jeff Austin...he's bought furniture from me. That's my store, Mountain Furniture Arts, on the corner of the Peak to Peak Highway and First Street in Ned.

http://www.MountainFurnitureArts.com is my website. I design custom furntiure for a living.

Re: The Well 8. It's party time with the Collins Brothers!

When I was a kid, I would go visit my Uncle who lived just outside Blackhawk. IIRC, there was a flashing yellow stoplight right there on the highway. My Uncle and Aunt moved out of there probably around 1988 or so- right before they announced the whole gambling thing in Central City/Blackhawk. I have really fond memories of that place.

What does it look like now?

As a little aside- I was visiting a friend at his parents' house. His dad was a model train collector and had this big chunk of the basement set up as a model train... setup. As I looked at it, I said "I know this place;" There was a scale model of Blackhawk and Central City as of like 1890 in his basement.

Re: The Well 8. It's party time with the Collins Brothers!

Now that you've operated an online music store for many years, do you think it's a good business, or do you see it mostly as a supplemental income? What do you think of Ebay stores now, as compared to 5 years ago?

Which types of music items do you think are the easiest to sell or have the best sales?

For me, it's a supplemental income. But I only sell guitar pickups and guitar parts. If I worked harder at it and invested more $$$ into expanding my line, I do believe I could live off of it.

As it is, my Duncan rep told me a few years ago that I was one of the top five Duncan dealers in the world. I don't know if that's still true or not. I doubt it is.

For me, the easiest items to sell are those I'm most enthused about and have the most experience with and which I use or have used myself.

I don't sell much to the heavy metal and heavy rock guys. Probably because I just don't have a lot of personal experience getting that kind of tone.

I stock them, but the Duncan Distortion and Dimebucker and Invader don't sell well at all for me. The Alnico 2 Pro HB's sell great! And the Antiquity Strat and Tele pickups. Although they are great pickups, the Antiquity HB's don't sell particularly well for me. Don't know why. The Seth Lovers do sell very well...and Phat Cats too! Duncan's SSL-1 and SSL-2 don't move very fast for me...which is weird because the Broadcaster Lead and Vintage Tele neck do sell well.

Seems like a lot of Tele players want the vintage 50's tone but Strat players want something smoother and hotter than vintage.

I find that a lot of Strat players are under the impression that SRV used overwound pickups. They want to get SRV's tone but they lack the touch it takes to use the pickups that SRV actually used.

SRV did not use overwound pickups. He used vintage Fender pickups wound like the Surfers or SSL-1's! But if your chops and your touch are not together those pickups sound harsh and to bright. If your chops and touch are together, those pickups don't sound to bright or to harsh at all.

The truth is, a really good player can shape the tone with his or her hands and most players can't do that yet...they're still learning.

They've ruined it. What was once a beautiful mountain town now has huge flashing signs everywhere advertising the "Loosest Slots In Town"...

Where's Bruce? to catch him on here is a rarity.

Bruce has been moving his shop and working 24/7 at it. I'd hoped to get him here to answer amp questions and such but looks like a "no go".

Hey Lew,

I'm sorry I missed this episode of The Well. I've been online very little lately, but I didn't want to miss out on this. Here's a simple/tough question for you: :)

What makes a Tele so much fun to play? Be as concrete or philosophical as you'd like in your response.

Amen to that whole post. I've got the Antiquity humbuckers and they are incredible pickups. Especially through a non-master type amp like a Marshall or Bassman. And only recently have I noticed--at the age of 44--that to get the SRV tone, you've gotta really bend and strike the strings HARD. At least that's how I get into that territory. I've pretty much always played Les Pauls, and you don't have to dig into one of those to get "that" sound. I think to get a strat to sound like a strat, you've really got to pull it out of that guitar, but when you do--wow! It is not a "kind" instrament, lol. It makes you work.
