Re: The Well LXXXX: To Nothingness and beyond!
so what brought you to the duncan forums, initially?
you've mentioned some diverse influences in your posts and in your sig; i understand there's a lot of metal grindage happening in your band, do you see the style changing to incorporate more of your jazz influence, and how will you make that stick in a 5-piece metal band?
Initially, I think it was curiosity. I had been a bit of a dimarzio fan, and I was researching replacement pups for my Ibanez. Came here to try to learn what my axe needed, and well, I discovered that there's a lot more than just pickup suggestions that I can learn about here
I very much doubt that jazz influences will show in our music, since it is a very particular kind of metal. That said, I'm not going to discount it totally, because I love using strange jazzy chords, and I know the other guitarist in my band occasionally uses some strange ones. There are a bunch of different influences spanning all our respective music habits, and I think they work well with each other (Our singer warms up by singing along to Jethro Tull!). So I dunno, maybe on the next album I'll throw in some kooky new things. As far as making it stick in a metal band (6-piece actually), it's entirely possible, and there are a bunch of bands that have done similar things (Opeth, Cynic, Enslaved, Martyr). The music just ends up taking on a way more progressive (in the same way that 70s prog bands took basic rock and made it...different, more experimental), and more interesting from a musician's perspective.
If you were to make the perfect album, explain the elements that would make it perfect. If another band already has a "perfect" album in your mind, tell us who it is and why it is, in your eyes, perfect.
What's your favorite soda? Favorite beer? Do you play video games? If so, what kind?
You know, I'm not sure such a thing exists. There are a few albums that I think come EXTREMELY close to perfect:
Megadeth - Peace Sells...But Who's Buying
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Yyrkoon - Occult Medecine
Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Enslaved - Isa
Pink Floyd - Animals
Jethro Tull - Benefit
Black Sabbath - Headless Cross
why are those so close? Great production (for their respective styles and times), awesome songwriting, but above all else, the flow from song to song through the whole album.
Not the biggest fan of soda (we call it pop here in the North hehe), but Root Beer if at all. Favourite beer, depends on the season, but I can drink Erdinger Weissbier anytime of the year and thoroughly enjoy it. Don't really play video games!
what instruments other than guitar can you play? if there are any, how well? what was your instrumental learning process like for the instrument(s) you play?
I taught myself how to play drums a while ago. Due to lack of access to a drum kit I can't practice anymore, but the skill is there. I actually got the foundation from learning military snare in high school. figured it'd come in handy if I ever wanted to play drums for real, and whaddya know, it did!
I can also play the didgeridoo and can circular breathe not completely amateurish, but I'm not very good unfortunately. A friend of mine in university played it, and I was so captivated by the instrument i demanded he teach me how to play. I can now use didgeridoo techniques on any long cylindrical tube, from cardboard paper towel tubes, to poster tubes, to PVC pipe. sounds hilarious when it's not coming from an actual didgeridoo!
Also I love playing hand drums of any kind. Djembe is probably the easiest for me though. Not sure how I learned how to play...I just..can. I guess I'm just rhythmically inclined somehow.
