Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

A few thought on the venerable vintage Ampeg Flip top Bass amps (b15 etal) please. I was offered one for 600.00 in fairlygood condition awhile back, but that was just too much dosh cause at the time I was on the hunt for a Marshall.Speaking of 'Marshall', was the "Major" used by bass players at all?
B15's were all over the major NY studios for decades; smooth, full tone. Not a lot of top end, so slappers may not be into it.

edit: Ampeg is offering a newer version with a HF horn, that may be more suitable for current tastes.

I've not had the pleasure of playing through a Marshall bass amp, so I defer to those who have.

So what do you REALLY think of Bootsy?
"Sex Machine" to P-Funk, I like him just fine. The Space Bass isn't the sum and substance of his career.

OK...How long have you lived in Paducah?
I've been here since May of '01, when my lady and I moved down here. She's been here since childhood.

I never knew it existed, before I visited with her Halloween '00.

Ever heard of the Lafayette Afro Rock Band?

What about Fela Kuti and Afrika 70?

What about all the new soul-funk bands like Breakestra, Quantic Soul Orchestra and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings?

What's the silliest thing you've worn onstage?

Much love for auto filters?

What's your favorite non-music related magazine?

Are there funk cliches you've had enough of?

Where do you stand on pesto?

Where are your favorite places on the planet?

When a band plays funk music and gets it wrong, what are usually the key problems to address?

Is late 80s/early 90s funk-metal the single worst genre of all time?

As a bass player, what are the most annoying traits you see in guitar players?

Or when I was leaving a goodbye note to my ex-GF after she dumped me ("I don't understand, but I still love you, I hope we can work things out", etc.)trying to slip it under her door and leave unnoticed, when she opened the door with just a robe on... and a male companion sitting on the couch.

ouch.

One of my best friends and his wife live in Paducah... pretty neat, I'd like to go down there someday.

Umm... I guess I'm supposed to ask a question... Have you ever had knee surgery?

Physically, what are your strengths?

Weaknesses?

Answer the same questions from a musical perspective.

Actually, yes. I tore a cartilidge in my right knee some years ago.

My younger bro calls "Darkest Light" 'that Rumpshaker sample'.

What about Fela Kuti and Afrika 70?
Oh man, I miss Kuti! Afrobeat is not something you find in western Kentucky. Antibalas works for me also...

Haven't kept up as much as I need to (see above), but I believe George Clinton said it best: "We're building a funk army, and we need all the recruits we can get."

What's the silliest thing you've worn onstage?
A "Kiss Me, I'm Irish" button on St. Patrick's Day. Not to mention the matching green cardboard top hat. My black aviator shades made the look even dumber.

Much love for auto filters?
Effects can be overdone, but if used tastefully, they add some spice. That is, unless you're referring to the vehicular variety, in which case they're necessary.

What's your favorite non-music related magazine?
Car & Driver.

Are there funk cliches you've had enough of?
Stupid audience chants... "Throw your hands in the air", "Somebody scream", etc. Here's my scream: STFU!!!

Where do you stand on pesto?
I haven't had a good pesto since I came down here. Not to mention the "authentic NY-style pizzerias" that don't get the sauce right, or have never seen a Sicilian pie. And will one of these morons get it right? Brown the sausage in the casing, then slice it on a slicing machine before you put it on the pizza!

Where are your favorite places on the planet?
Beechmont Lake, Westchester County NY. Childhood memories... edit: see below)

When a band plays funk music and gets it wrong, what are usually the key problems to address?
Bass and drums tugging against each other and not locking up, or perhaps rushing/pushing the beat and not laying back in the groove, or trying too hard to copy an original (James Brown, P-funk, etc) exactly like the hit recording.

Is late 80s/early 90s funk-metal the single worst genre of all time?
Nu-metal was amusing and interesting for a time, then it got old fast. It might have succeeded, if the musicians had less ego. Clyde Stubblefield had more groove with one small kick and a Ludwig Speed King pedal, than most drummers (precious few exceptions, like Will Calhoun from Living Colour) could ever comprehend playing with 24" parade drums on either side.

As a bass player, what are the most annoying traits you see in guitar players?
Soloing too long, and not knowing how to play rhythm parts. If you're called upon, say something to the point, don't distract from the flow, and then get back in and support the groove.

One guitarist I played with thought he was the second coming of John Mayer -- as if the first one wasn't enough! If I could use some of these egos as models for digital reverb, I'd get infinite sustain. This bugs me even more, since I've kept up my 6-string chops. I could step up and do my thing, with no discernable loss in quality.

edit 2: another of my fave places, please G** let me go back soon... the Mediterranean beach at Holiday Club M'diq, Tetouan province, Morocco -- I took this pic from the hotel room balcony. It's my desktop photo.

What is your special power?

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

Are you ever going to answer my question all the way back on page one...i think, lol?

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

This has been a good well! You're an interesting dude and a good writer, Ginormous.

Apologies if you've already covered this, but is there a womern in yer life currently?

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

What would your "dream band" be?

Is there a bass player who you think you most closely identify with in style? Who, and why? And how do you differ from that player? Is that good or bad?

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

what made you want to pick up a bass? was there someone or something you heard on the radio or a LP one day which just made you say "sheeeeeeet, i wanna do that!!"
Most likely, it was this one:

My dad engineered Buddah/T-Neck TNS-3001 at the legendary A&R Studios in NYC, and they gave him a RIAA gold record for the 45. Incredibly funky, and a total break from their previous Motown soul sound.

Thanks, bro! This is a treat for me, also... maybe I'm not as boring as I thought.

Apologies if you've already covered this, but is there a woman in yer life currently?

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

What would your "dream band" be?
My dream band would be Afro-Latin jazz-rock-funk... like if Maurice White had a summit meeting with George Clinton, Carlos Santana, Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock, Maceo Parker, Me'shell Ndegeocello, (edit: Almost forgot Ray Barreto, Raul Rekow and Sammy Figueroa...) Dave Weckl, Booker T. & the MG's... and SRV just happened to walk by, and said, "Hmm, that's pretty cool. Lemme check these guys out."

Is there a bass player who you think you most closely identify with in style? Who, and why? And how do you differ from that player? Is that good or bad?
So many people have affected me, influenced me, and just caved my skull in with their playing, that pinning it down to just one is a challenge. Perhaps the one I identify most with is Chuck Rainey. He has been so consistent, so strong and original over the years, that it makes me want to have that same power flowing in my blood.

The bad thing is, I'm nowhere near as good as he is. The good thing is I'm still learning, and always will be, as long as my mind is stable and my hands are able.
