There are some things I just don't understand.

Re: There are some things I just don't understand.

Well, it's not just the kids. I'm in my 50's and agree with him. I could see spending a couple grand on an LP, but wouldn't even consider it for any bolt-on. Just my own personal bias.

Well, that's a given. I didn't even think that it would be worth mentioning, since we all assumed that you would immediately take this opportunity to bash something that Gibson doesn't do.

Re: There are some things I just don't understand.

As someone who has read a lot of internet guitar build threads, I can tell you, building a set neck doesn't take any more work than a bolt on.

It's the things that usually come along with set necks, like TOM bridges, which are elevated and require the neck to be angled, which requires the headstock to be angled, and caps on top of the body wood, and carved tops.

Carving a top, gluing and bookmatching a top, and angling a neck pocket and neck, and building a scarf joint to do an angled headstock all take a lot of work.

But there is nothing inherently more work intensive about set neck construction than bolt on construction. Don't believe me? Take two guitar bodies and two guitar necks, glue one and clamp it, then bolt the other on, and tell me which takes longer.

TL;DR - correlation / causality

Re: There are some things I just don't understand.

It's the balance of the materials/workmanship that makes a price/value ratio good or bad. There are set neck guitars in the world that are dogs next to certain bolt-neck models, and visa versa.

OMG are we seriously having this thread again?

Re: There are some things I just don't understand.

Fender is going Ibanez, and Ibanezes have humbuckers like Gibsons, so Fenders and Gibsons are practically the same

have you guys not been keeping up?

Re: There are some things I just don't understand.

Hmm my CS Strat is about the only guitar I never had taken apart, changed anything on, nor had any urges to "upgrade" on....
Changed strings.....and played....and played and so on.....
Don't need any new magnets, nor glue in its neckjoint...
You get what you pay for!

+1. Those are all things I prefer in a guitar, along with 3x3 tuners and big inlays (easier for old eyes to see on a dim stage). They happen to be the norm on most set neck guitars. Again, just preference.

No bashing on my part. As I took pains to clearly point out, it's 'My personal bias'. You could be a little more mature in your posts. How about dialing down the temperature a bit?

Re: There are some things I just don't understand.

does the "spank" really come from the construction or the species of wood and the pickups??

i think a neck-thru, all maple guitar with texas specials would spank more than a traditional strat would.

No, The bolt on connection filters different frequencies from the instrument than a neck through or glue on neck. Its inherent to the design.

Maximum sustain is not always the goal or point of an instrument.

Re: There are some things I just don't understand.

You can get better sustain just by using an overdrive pedal as a boost, but regardless, I wouldnt spend much on a bolt on either. It surprises me guys that get signature guitars, Phil Collen for example, go for a bolt on.
But clearly those guys like them, its all subjective.

And again, I see Blueman gets jumped on for saying he likes set necks, like he's committed some crime against humanity - there is an ignore list people, since his posts irritate you so much, stick his name on it instead of being so childish.
