There's just something about the 5150 sound...

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

SLIGHTLY OT :

. . . can you sound guru's mention any bands who used 5150/6505's (ONLY) on their albums !

I know Black Stone Cherry used ONLY 6505's to record their 1st album, and you can deff hear it on the opening riff of 'Lonely Train'.

Any other bands that you care to mention - where these amps where the only units used to record with ???

Thanks Guys

I think Bullet For My Valentine only use the 6505+ for their recordings and live rigs.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

I'm pretty sure Machine Head used 5150s for their early albums , they might still use them as far as I know

Machine Head used and still uses 5150's (as far as I know).

Thanks . . . i'll see what i can hear on their albums - also never looked into their stuff.

Did 'Parkway Drive' not use 6505's at some point ?

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

Another band that use the 5150 almost exclusively is August Burns Red. I suspect that Parkway Drive uses them also, but I don't know for sure.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

Yup, one of the best metal amps available, period.

Wish they made a low watt version with a nice clean channel :(

If they made a 25 watt 5150 with a really clean clean channel I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

The 5150 III 50 watt sounds great at low, mid and high volumes. It also has the bonus resonance dial on the back so it can sound huge at low volumes. The bigger III doesn't have that feature.

The first two God Forbid albums are all 5150.
Early Strapping Young Lad is too.
In Flames as well, and Chimaira is all 6505+ up to the latest album.
Jerry Cantrell blended a 5150 on the Tipod album.
Gojira From Mars to Sirius.
KSE blended one as well on early albums.
Neuraxis The Thin Line Between

Many others I can't remember right now too.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

I think Black Tora uses them. Razor Dave sent me an E-mail and told me his experience with them. He is a cool dude and he gets a good sound live.
I played the hell out of the 50 watt evhiii with a bud from guitar center and we ran several les pauls and strats including guitars with emg's and with the res switch on the back you can dial in about any tone you want. I like mine with 2 2/12 celestion vin30cabs. It realy is a great amp. Anything better is only maybe 10 to 15 percent better and its always at least twice the price. Bang for the buck the 50 watt evhiii just kicks ass.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

there's a used 6505+ 50 watt combo at the local GC for $399. Ya'll are killing me with this talking.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

That's a killer deal, I'd hop on that right quick.

Its been there for a while. As much as I would like to get it, I don't have a real reason to. Hey, if anyone else wants to jump on it, its at the Roseville, CA location. There's a Krank head for 500 there too. Its yellow, if that means anything. There's some gah damm nice guitars on the wall too...

I'm thinking I'll see what my boo-teekish pedals will get me in trade and get a Super Champ.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

The 6505+ combo is actually made in China and is different in the preamp then the head version of the 6505+. I'd also take into the consideration that I saw one online on GC's used section for $350 for a couple months, so I think $400 isn't that great of a deal.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

The 5150 III 50 watt also makes a great home use/ recording amp at low volumes. I did a sample recording on my iPhone once- using the simple iPhone mic, and was surprised how great a tone I got- not pro, but even on bad equipment it sounds good.

I almost went with the 6505+ combo. It was much cheaper, but it really needed to be cranked to get a good tone- it wasn't house/ apartment friendly like the 5150 III 50 watt is, it sounded a bit muddier, and the clean was nowhere as good.

Also, for my purpose- I was looking to downsize my rig, and the EVH had a smaller footprint. The 6505+ combo- with one speaker, was almost the size of a 2x12

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

I'm probably going to consider getting a 5150III somewhere down the line, mainly for the fact that when I was amp shopping a couple years ago, it was literally a coin toss between the 5150III and the Mark V, and I went for the Mesa. I just loved that amp way too much, but I felt the same about the 5150III too. The one thing I like most about the 5150III is the ease of use. It's so simple to dial in tones, it takes like 2 minutes to find the holy grail tone. Fender like cleans, insane overdrive tones, blistering leads, it's got it all.

I'd probably go with the 100 Watt through, mainly because I'd like the separation of the 3 channels, and the fact that I can crank it in my house no problem without pissing anybody off

Ressurection was actually a JSX and Krank (2 tracks of each), Oversized Boogie Recto cab. Goes to show how much of the that well engineered album sound we associate with the 5150/6505 and Recto amps is actually in the cab. Both the JSX and Krank can get ballpark 5150 tones/80 percent of the way there (although ultimately both amps have their own thing going), so again, not much of a stretch.
I've heard clips of Marshall JVMs that I thought were actually clips of a Recto amp, but nope, JVM into OS Recto cab.

Arch Enemy - Anthems of Rebellion was 2 tracks 5150 and 2 tracks XXX, Marshall 1960AV
Job for a Cowboy - Genesis was a 5150 into OS Recto cab

See if anyone else can add to that list too

The jsx was for leads only on Resurrection. Awesome album. 6505 has been their staple for years. Arnold experimented with amps here and there, like the Powerball, but the never lasted. Devries always used 6505 too.
Crown of Phantoms is pretty great too. The new guitar players are really refreshing for the band. That album is all Ecstasy blended with a Recto.
Genesis also had a Vht Pittbull on it, used by the second guitar player who is no longer with the band. Demonocracy is a boosted Recto and a 5150.

Nope. It's a boosted SLO profile on a kemper profile amp.

IIRC on of the guitarists told Keith Merrow publicly on facebook that it was a kemper profile of the SLO that they put a TS9 in front of.

I believe Andy Sneap himself debunked the JSX only for leads things and confirmed the JSX/Krank for rhythms. Maybe there is still 5150 somewhere on the album, considering the Chimaira guys were always in 5150s, but I'm not sure.
I actually googled Demonocracy, had no idea what it was :laugh2: . I've never followed JFAC at all really and admittedly can't tell much about them other than I know one of the current guitarists is from the Sneap forum.
The only album I know of theirs and have heard is Genesis. Not a bad album , but just seems like pretty standard death metal with modern production, nothing terribly exciting. Anyway, I digress :P

If they made a 25 watt 5150 with a really clean clean channel I would buy one in a heartbeat.

The irony being at 25 watts it would break up quite a lot at high volumes :laugh2:
Would be much better to just get someone to mod the tone stack of the green channel on a 6505+ and then use only the red channel for high gain work and just add an EQ of similiar boost in the loop if you need a small volume boost for leads. You'd then have a clean channel that would hold up at high volumes too, taking advantage of the headroom of the amp.
