These new Fender Blacktop Basses are OUT-THA-CONTROL!

Re: These new Fender Blacktop Basses are OUT-THA-CONTROL!

When i first saw this I got all sorts of fuzzy and excited. But now that ive looked at them for awhile im scratching my head and wondering. How will they sound. How will that P-pickup sound in the Jazz of the bridge and look at the positioning of the neck pickup on the P bass, its out of the sweet spot almost makes me think they were trying to cop like a stingray thing with them. Dunno im still curious but now I want to hear them before buying.

I'd pick one up for the hell of it if I had the spare change.

I'm hating the silver though.

You know what would sound huge? P pickup in the centre position. Double J pickup where a CBS Telecaster Bass has its Wide Range humbucker. That would really pack some Attitude. :D

Re: These new Fender Blacktop Basses are OUT-THA-CONTROL!

I am buying one of these. That's all there is to it. My store has the Blacktop guitars so we'll probably get the basses too.

I've been looking for a good bass and I was JUST about to pull the trigger on a Schecter Stiletto Elite but I'm going to hold off until I test one of these guys.

I would love to hear the double-P Jazz one. I've decided I am not such a huge fan of buckers in basses.

Re: These new Fender Blacktop Basses are OUT-THA-CONTROL!

The double J pickup P Bass might prove interesting if its four coils could be selected and combined individually - like the old Roscoe Beck signature bass.

In my experience, a split coil P pickup set close to the bridge never sounds very good.

Re: These new Fender Blacktop Basses are OUT-THA-CONTROL!

Ok, so we have a P-Bass with J-Bass pickups and a J-Bass with dual P-Bass pickups. Strange. While they look cool, if it were me, I would have designed both to have a J pickup in the bridge and P pickup in the middle. That's just me though.

I think the P looks better with that configuration than the J does with the P pickups. The J just looks odd that way.

we got the dual-humbucker P-basses at my shop

i plugged it into an SVTVR stack and played some Slayer riffs

i knocked some saxophones off the wall in the woodwind section

There's already several P-basses, past and present, that had the P/J config, so that would make these kinda pointless, methinks.

Currently, I think the Duff McKagan signature has that config, as well as a J-shaped neck.

Yeah, I know. I used to work in a music shop in the 90's and sold a ton of basses with that config. It just works.

I didn't even know he had his own sig bass.

Re: These new Fender Blacktop Basses are OUT-THA-CONTROL!

I must admit, as much as I love the Stingray sound, I'm not really certain how useful a HB in a bass would be. Single coils usually have more clarity so for playing cleans (which, let's face it, you're gonna be doing most of the time on a bass), wouldn't they be preferable?
