Thin-bodied, carved-top mahogany guitar?

Hey everyone,

Recently I was in a music store and had the chance to play a Maguire Meridian guitar (see pic), and totally fell in love with it. Unfortunately, it's a $5,000 guitar, so a little outside my price range...

What I really loved about it though was the thin carve-top body, and slim but still beefy neck. My hands are on the smaller side, so I don't like Les Paul necks, and this was a similar neck profile to a PRS neck, maybe a bit thinner. I also liked its light weight (a little over 7 lbs), and the way the tone was rich and just thick enough, but still had some cut.

So...the million dollar question is: do any other guitars exist that are similar to this, but more affordable? By this I mean: 24.75" scale length, carved top mahogany body (with or without a cap), medium-thick neck, double-cutaway, two-humbuckers, and light 6.5-7.5 lbs), and preferably a stop-tail bridge (though that's not a deal-breaker). I don't need fancy controls or anything, just volume and tone, I want this for stripped down blues/hard rock.

While I'm not willing to pay $5k, I do want something relatively nice, so I'd consider up to the ~$2k range. I've scoured most "mainstream" brands and haven't found anything like this. I do already have a PRS McCarty (which is a little thicker than I'd like), and have owned a PRS Custom 24 in the past, which didn't quite do it for me. But those are the closest I've come aside from the Meridian. But I'm cool to explore lesser known brands, private builders, etc.

Thanks so much for your help! And I hope I'm not just chasing an imaginary unicorn...or I might as well just start saving up for the real deal :).

I'll add to BloodRose's comment by recommending 2 (or 3) other Dean Zelinsky designs, the Imperial/Imperial Jr made by Diamond (formerly DBZ), and the DZPL Zenyatta (which seems to be recently discontinued). They're very similar guitars, sort of like if you smooshed a Les Paul into a 335-size width. So, ultra-thin, like Ibanez S series thin, but solidbody and otherwise your basic 2 humbucker Gibson-style guitar. Very comfy to play.

Speaking of Ibanez S series, there's the SF470, that rare (but cheap) model with a TOM bridge and 24.75" scale.

Not as thin as the Maguire - more sort of like a slightly thicker SG - is the PRS Mira. If you need 24.75" scale, then that's the Mira X, which isn't a carved top, but which has a comfortable forearm contour.

Then there are the Dean Hardtail and Icon guitars. You do have some options in this space.

Being as your touch points are PRS, I'm surprised you haven't dived into the S2 series - different look and feel to core line - outstanding value. I own, and play regularly, an S2 Vela - wonderful.

To my eyes and ears, the Mira is closest to what you're seeking http://www.prsguitars.com/index.php/electrics/s2/s2_mira_2017

Thanks everyone! These are great suggestions, I hadn't heard of most of these (aside from the Ibanez S, which I had considered, but was a bit too similar to another guitar I have...). Keep the ideas coming :)!

PRS Custom 22. Thinner than your McCarty. But doesn't have that gibson-like tone..

Your best bet is a SG, IMO. A used Historic.

Or find a Tak Matsumoto (sp) model Gibson (edit- I believe these are les paul thickness- sorry)

Also check Edwards potbelly and Tokai probably has something similar..

I'm intrigued by this guitar, it does seem rather similar! Has anyone tried it and can comment on the sound?

Re: Thin-bodied, carved-top mahogany guitar?

I played one years ago in a shop, iirc it was not quite LP sounding, but not quite SG either, but that was five or more years ago. I do remember it playing very well and having well finished frets and a very comfortable neck

Re: Thin-bodied, carved-top mahogany guitar?

Oh cool, so it was halfway between an LP and SG, or you mean a totally different beast? It does look sleek (like many of the other suggestions), and the price is quite reasonable! I just wish I had a better guitar store around here (Phoenix area) so I could try out more interesting guitars, i.e. not the same "boring" selection at Guitar Center...

The LaVoce and Imperial are pretty much going to be the same. Both are the same guy's creation, just diff co name. I dont recall or think the Imperial has all the switching options. And, I think they offer a 20 or 30 day trial period

With a budget in the 2k range...why not contact one or two of the forum brothers who build guitars. Orpheo comes immediately to mind, but there are also several others. See what they charge.

Best case...you get exactly what you want, AND support a forum brother.
Worst case...the price is too high and you keep looking.

Thanks everyone! These are cool suggestions, and it's always fun to discover totally new guitar brands or custom builders! If any forum members want to post links with previous guitars they've built that are similar to what I'm looking for, I'd love to take a look...
