Thin frets... why do players like them?

hey guys, i've read a bit into the benefits of wide (fat) frets - easier bending, vibrato, etc..

but why do some stick with the narrow vintage style? im just curious..

I have small hand & play 24 3/4 in. scale gtrs. W/ the smaller scale, thin frets help me fit my fingers between them, even with some crazy chord voicings up the neck.

+1
It might seem crazy to some people, but thats the way it is, some prefer Jumbo Frets, and some like the smaller more vintage... If I remember correclty Randy Rhoads was one of the people that prefered smaller frets, and he definetly TORE IT UP.

bu bu bu bu but... why?! lol

is there a particular aspect of feel, or is it a case of sticking to what you're used to?

Yeah, it's all about feel... Some people with smaller frets don't play a lot of tapping crazy solo stuff, but I've played Eruption on my strat just fine. It's just that some people think bigger frets make it easier to play.. Smaller hands has a lot to do with it, A little easier to play on smaller frets, just feels better too....

I use both medium jumbo and the vintage "nail" frets....The vintage frets are more comfy for chording on the Fender vintage 7.25" radius necks and give a player a more articulate and precise tone...Early players pretty much grew up with these frets because that's all that was offered in earlier years...The nail frets are harder to bend on,especially on the rounder 7.25" radius in the 12th to 15th fret regions...

The bigger frets(Mediums and Jumbos)make bending easier, offer more overall thickness to tone due to more mass under the strings, but you have to be more careful with your intonation with the jumbos because you actually can press notes sharp since you have more space between the strings and the board...I personally like a medium fret like Fender currently uses on their American Series and American Deluxe strats..Some guys find sliding and chording uncomfortable on the jumbo frets..

very true now i think about it... you get almost a vibrato effect by pushing straight down at varying degrees of pressure.. sure, could you say tall, wide frets have the rudiments of neck scalloping? like, you don't touch the actual fingerboard when fretting quickly...

Right, but some guys actually like to feel the wood a bit under their fingers and that's what the lower, thinner profile vintage frets offer..I love both, but for bending,I Like taller and wider(Medium frets)on a 9.5" or 12" radius neck..For straight chording and playing clean strat/Tele stuff,I Love the vintage frets on the vintage radius neck...Actually my strats have 1 of each of these radius necks...

And it's a style/preference thing for sure!

I like Gibson LP Custom style fretwire. The "Fretless Wonder" feel is great on me wee little woman hands!

You'll get more accurate intonation with narrow frets, compared to wide frets...I assume you're talking about fret width, not fret height. It's also a bit easier to slide into notes with wider frets.

I've always wondered why people say it's easier to play on extra jumbo frets. I'd like to try guitars with those and just jumbos... dammit there are so many options out there!
