Thin picks?`

Re: Thin picks?`

No thin picks for me...I've been using the Dunlop Jazz 207 for a while now, and it doubles as a mando pick.

Recently I got ahold of some v-picks and they get crazy thick. Good tone, though.

I went the other way. Used thin picks for decades, then found that a pick that bends at all reduces accuracy (and thus speed), like trying to hit a baseball with a flapping bat.

Only the 2mm Dunlop Stubbies work for me. They also have a 3mm but that's a little too thick. Such a fat taper that it's like trying to pick with a pingpong ball.

Re: Thin picks?`

3.00mm Dunlp Big Stubbys or metal picks are all I use nowadays.... :D

Re: Thin picks?`

1.14 jazz III red or 1.14 Jazz III tortex purple. baby!

FYI, the red (& black) Jazz IIIs are 1.38.

The 1.14 tortex Jazz III is one of my favorites.... I spend about 80% of my time with that one. I wish they made a .73 or .60 tortex Jazz III.

Re: Thin picks?`

2mm adamas graphite pics for me. I cant use the relly thin ones. On acoustic i will mediums because i find the 2mm ones way to dark sounding for acoustic.

Re: Thin picks?`

i got a metric buttload of the dunlop yellow see thru's for christmas ... that is a lifetim supply for me .. doubt i'll ever switch ... they work fine for me in a classic rock cover setting where i have to be able to play alead and rhythm

if i was playing exclusively eclectic electric jazz-rock-blues instrumentals, i'd be all about the dark purple teardrop stubbies - i think they are 2 or 3 mm ...

Re: Thin picks?`

It's either the Dunlop green or blue tortex or Fender heavies. I've been using Fender picks for a while now but every so often I'll grab a tortex instead. Used to use thin picks way back in my early playing days but I snap the tips off too fast. I'm more comfortable playing with a heavier pick.

Re: Thin picks?`

Man, I don't know how you guys can stand those tortex picks. They have a bright/brittle sound that they add, that other picks don't have. Not to mention the fact that they feel gritty.

But anyways, I learned to play guitar with 0.58mm, but those seemed flappy eventually. I settled on 0.88mm, and I'll probably stick with those.

Re: Thin picks?`

What do you like? The only ones I've really tried are the Dunlop Tortex & Nylon, Herco Flex 50, and a Clayton .56.

It varies but these are what I like best so far

1) the Dunlop medium brown Celluloids (which are a bit softer and sound better than the Fender mediums)- the marble and black ones are not the same, they are a bit stiffer and sound different.

2) Dunlop Tortex orange or red (.50 and .60?)

3) Dunlop Gator Grip .58

and normally I hate nylon picks (i.e. Dunlop, Herco style, etc), but the Wedgie textured Nylon is the pick I use 85% of the time these days. I LOVE these things, I actually turn the contoured thumb area around backwards: gives me a cleaner attack, and these are not as "muddy" sounding as a typical Nylon-they are 'warm" but have some clarity, if that makes sense. The tips do wear down fairly fast though on this size.

Re: Thin picks?`

I use tortex .88 or 1.0s...the green or blue ones in the standard shape...I play too much rhythm for the stubby or jazz style picks.

I can't handle a pick that has less resistance than a string...floppy picks won't cut it.

Re: Thin picks?`

I really like the idea of those textured picks, but I don't understand why the texture is so far back. I hold mine with ~ 3mm of the tip sticking out. If I hold one of those so the texture works, I might as well be playing with a baseball card.

Ya know what's weird? I've used the Jazz III size almost since I started playing, but only recently started getting into lead stuff. I've never understood why people don't like them for rhythm playing.

Maybe because I've used them since I started playing :)

Re: Thin picks?`

It's good there's tons of options, and feel and tone are the main reason for pick thicknesses. One thing though, if you're a good player you can make a thick pick sound and feel (strum/percussive) like a thin pick when you want, and then have the thick tone of it when you need it, all by your technique and grip. But when you have a thin pick, you're pretty much stuck with that flop, unless you bite down on it so hard to eliminate flop, but then you're technique is compromised.

Re: Thin picks?`

On a acoustic i always play with a thin pick 0.40mm,i used to play with jazzIII
picks the black one, about a year ago i started to use thinner and thinner pick
i'm down to 0.50mm now for electric.

Re: Thin picks?`

I have usedso many differentthings itsnot even funny. i used to like the ultex picks about .83 i think they were and 70 something i think for acoustic but they are just too slick. Could not keep them from sliding out of position. I tired the red jazz III picks and can't hardly play leads with anything else. I have the thinner black ones too but i tend to use the red more. I feel like with a regular sized pick that i am trying to play with a 50 cent peice or something. just way too much pick. But even though i can play acoustic with the jazz III, the thin 70ish tortex or ultex is unbeatable for cripy sounding fast(or slow) strum chords on acoustic.

Re: Thin picks?`

How much pick do you guys leave sticking out that a pick is floppy?

I found over time I couldn't be as articulate with a heavier pick. I learned with heavy Fender Jazz picks, switched to puprle Tortex and worked my way down to the red over time. I get a lot of fingertip into my attack and control tone quite easily with how aggresive I go at the strings, I use 11's fwiw. I'll destroy regular plastic picks in a thin but the tortex holds up pretty well, I don't snap them but I grind them down fast.

I use .88's too, Dunlops in grey. They have raised letters which helps for gripping (you don't want sweaty picks flying out of your hands on stage). They also have sharp beveled edges that add bite & treble. I pick with the sides (unless I'm playing fast) and it gives that wonderful sound of pick noise that some of the late 1960's British blues/rock players used (which is enhanced by reverb & delay). Lots of personality. Great tones from those picks.

same here. the other 20% i switch to the good ol' tortex .88, regular shape.

unless im playing bass, in which case its 100% of the time .88 ultex big triangles

Re: Thin picks?`

Thicker picks just offer so much more control. Especially when it comes to pinch harmonics and the such. I'd just about rip a thin pick in two otherwise.

V-picks for me, 2.75mm

Re: Thin picks?`

this thread shows how many different picking styles people use and i find this very interesting. i play guitar for about 10 years now, but i never had lessons, just learned by myself and i know that my technique is lacking in many aspects. for example, i never learned how to shred because i'm a hopeless downstroker and even though at one point i managed to nail a couple of fast licks after A LOT of practice i found out that it just wasn't FUN for me to play that way. so i'm back to my old bad habits. i actually like a bit thicker picks but i use tortex 0.60 because i break my strings all the time with thicker gauge. and i prefer the sound of celluloid but can't use them as they shatter instantly in my hand. there you have it. off my chest. i'll go sit in the corner for a while.
