Thin picks?`

Re: Thin picks?`

I usually use the Black Tortex 1.14 Jazz III's, but lately I've been spending a TON of time with the big pizza-slice triangle .73 Tortex Yellows. Now I know why Devin Townsend likes these things so much!

That's funny, I just bought some pizza-slice heavy picks just because Devy Townsend likes them so much, to try! BTW Jeff, the D-Activator is awesome. The Air Norton, I didn't like. I got a Humbucker from Hell for the neck and love that!

Re: Thin picks?`

What do we mean by "pizza-slice" picks?

I remember the exact Guitar Player article where DT said that, and I didn't know what the hell he meant then, either :)

Re: Thin picks?`

Well, I don't know exactly what they're really called but they're those oversized picks that kind of resemble a pizza slice, kind of triangle shaped but more rounded.

If you go to INTUNEPICKS.COM, they're the picks they call "Tri-Tip".

Re: Thin picks?`

...Use different picks for different things..when playing acoustic I usually go for .73 or 1.mm.
For my normal electric playing I use 2mm Stubby picks...sometimes coins, and pyrex glass picks, and polished stone too....I like picks:)
Use my fingers just as much!

Where in the world do you guys get pizza? Or do you just cut it into fourths? A slice of pizza is isosceles, not equilateral :D

I love those picks, the one side wears flip it to the other. I have like 20 of them I carry with me when playing out.

Re: Thin picks?`

In my experience and as far as I'm aware, the general consensus of opinion goes like this....

For strumming a thin pick is faster than a heavy one however for lead work a thick pick is faster than a thin.
( At this stage some one chimes in and says that they find the opposite. )

The thinner the pick the lighter or less full the tone is across the full frequency band compared to a thicker pick.

It is interesting to note that there is as much if not more tonal difference using diffferent pick materials than there is in swapping pickups.
A metal pick compared to a felt or wood pick is a pretty extreme example.
A nylon or tortex compared to a bone or celluloid also makes for some interesting though more subtle tonal changes.

Personally I use picks carved from a block of Alaskan ice !
Some may say your a bit of a drip if you do, still others will think your cool.

Whatever gets you through the night it's.....

Re: Thin picks?`

When I use Tortex picks (Which I have used pretty solid from about 1995 until maybe 3 months ago) I use the .73's and NOTHING else...anything thinner than that is too floppy and anything thicker feels like Im trying to use a **** 2x4 it just feels so big. Recently I switched to Fender Heavys...they are a little thicker and stiffer than the Tortex .73's but I think the sound is much better despite they fact that they wear much faster...Im not sure I'll make a complete switch but I di like these Fender heavies...

On the issue of thin vs thicker remember this...you can play light with a heavy pick but you can't play heavy with a light pick...

For what it's worth, can I suggest you try, if you haven't already :
Fender Heavy Premium celluloid picks.
Not to be confused with Fender Heavy celluloid picks.
The premium wear even faster than the normal celluloid and are a little more expensive but are worth the cost and inconvenience IMO.
A/B the celluloid with the Premium celluloid and the difference in fullness of tone should be immediately apparent.
If not.... just tell me I'm being overly "picky."

Here's ya a pizza slice for guitar and bass...the #207 one...one of the best picks I've ever used.

Re: Thin picks?`

Gotta use whatever works for you.

I use Fender Heavys and sometimes Fender Medium.

But I have to special order my picks.

The pick I use is shaped like a typical Fender Medium but it's about 2/3 the size.

Not as small as those little tiny picks some jazz players use but smaller than a normal Fender Medium.

As for thin picks: I hate 'em. Feels like I'm playing with a little piece of paper.

Re: Thin picks?`

I started on Gator Grip 1 mm, then switched to Tortex .88 for about 4 years, then switched to Tortex .73 which I have been using ever since. Occasionally I pick up an .88 when I want a heavier attack, but my general purpose pick is the .73. Anything lighter than the .73 feels sloppy to me.

Re: Thin picks?`

I was a Fender med guy for decades. I like the thin for acoustic stuff. Found Dava control picks a few years ago, never used anything else since. It's thicker than a med, but can flex like a med-thin, perfect for my rhythm style, When going for a lead, choke up on the tip and it becomes a med-heavy. Has nice grip and great flex, they last a long time too. They also make some with cell or metal tips, but the all nylon greenies work for me.

Re: Thin picks?`

I tend to switch back and forth between purple and yellow sharps. I used the Jazz IIIs for awhile, but I just felt more comfortable with the sharps.

Re: Thin picks?`

.60 Dunlop Lucky 13s here...

I've had everything from über thick 3mm Stubbys to .46 Nylons the 1mm Stubby Jazz or how it's called... until recently I used the 1mm Ultex... but they always felt a bit brittle and they kill your picking dynamics because they don't flex. The .60 Lucky 13s have great grip and just the right amout of bend so you can actually "feel" the string and adjust your playing style to whatever is needed. And they look way cool. But that's a different story. ;)
