Things you disliked, but are OK with now.

What are some things you disliked about guitars, but have grown to appreciate?

I used to hate red finishes on guitars because I felt it made them look cheap. But, now I can't have enough red ones! I used to also dislike gold hardware because it seemed gaudy, but I now own guitars with it that have become favorites.

I always thought Telecasters were just ugly and wimpy looking... now I'm GASsing for one big time!

Also never saw the point of P-90s, but after getting a P-90 guitar and also putting P-Rails in my semi-hollow, I find them to be a lot of fun!

Re: Things you disliked, but are OK with now.

Cheesy and weird-looking old 1960s abberations covered with chintzy pickups, knobs and switches, esp Italian designs and stuff like the original Yamaha Samurais and Ibanez Montclairs, Teiscos and all those kind of things.

Couldn't stand such things when I was a seriously heavy teenager in the 1970s. Now I think they're great, and love that they still irritate a lot of the serious young insects and scowly-faces today. I love that some contemporary manufacturers still have designs inspired by those quirky old originals, too.

Re: Things you disliked, but are OK with now.

I used to dislike LPs and strats with pickguards and teles.. Being an 80s metal guy, I loved Kramers, jacksons and Charvels with plain bodies or custom paint jobs or pointies like explorers.. Now I love LPs cuz of the tone and playability and classic look.. I still dont care for the look of teles, but there is no substitute for the tele tones. And, tho I still dont prefer pickguards, I love my Charvel that has one..

Also, never was a fan of p90s. Till I bought a lp that had them cuz I thought I should add the tone to the arsenal.. was quite fun.. miss that one

I used to hate anything without a Floyd/equivalent...now, while I still much prefer Floyd's, I'm OK with the odd hardtail/non-locking strat-type trem on a guitar or two...

My AXL Badwater 1216, Crusty's wine/burgundy LP & a couple of others I've come across made me realize that an LP(style) guitar (with the odd finishing tweaks/different colors) could actually be appealing & look pretty cool to me...I hate the look of them otherwise. Nothing can save a Tele in my eyes though...they're just way too ugly haha.

I used to hate LP's. Now, it's my #1.

I still hate vibrato's.

Re: Things you disliked, but are OK with now.

Used to dislike strats.....or at least the tones I could get out of one. Now with more skills and a bit more nuance to my playing they are almost my fave type of guitar.

Re: Things you disliked, but are OK with now.

After twelve years of owning only a fretless bass, I decided to give frets a try. I tolerate them. ;)

Re: Things you disliked, but are OK with now.

Went from hating Floyds to loving them. And I now think single coils are an acceptable feature in the neck position of a guitar (though still much prefer 4-conductor HB + split switch). Other than that, nothing much have changed over the course of the past 17 years or so. I still have the same opinion of how a guitar should and shouldn't be built.

Nothing can save a Tele in my eyes though...they're just way too ugly haha.

Amen.

Used to hate single coils. Now I love them, especially in the neck position. Even wired my Jacksons neck hum to just single coil.

Re: Things you disliked, but are OK with now.

Almost forgot! I also used to think semi-hollows were bland and boring... but since I got one it's become one of favorite guitars to play.

Re: Things you disliked, but are OK with now.

I used to hate 22 frets, but that was when every solo I played was up from the 17th fret and higher. I didn't really believe that you could solo lower on the neck

Re: Things you disliked, but are OK with now.

Neck pickups, tone controls and Telecasters.

Re: Things you disliked, but are OK with now.

When I was younger, my biggest consideration for a good heavy tone would be if it was tight or not.
I had no good words for terms like "fuzzy, loose", etc. Now I like having both schools of tone in my rig.
That's because loose, fuzzy distorted tones sound messy and unpredictable. And that's amazing.

I also thought cleans had to be clean. Roland JC120-like. With a single channel tube amp, that went off my map for good.
Again, more interesting sounds are found in a slightly grittier setting.

I'm also dialing more and more mids in my sound. Getting a good midrange response is hard to nail.

With that out of the way, I've always disliked almost all pointy guitars, Floyd Roses, silly low action and overly complicated amps.
And that hasn't changed.

It took me a loooooooong time to appreciate my Mesa Stiletto.

Definitely neck single coils. (I just didn't know :/ )

My Antiquity II Surf set made me LOVE single coils again.

Re: Things you disliked, but are OK with now.

Clean channel, reverb.

Still, not a tone pot + single coil + floyd + semi-hollow guy. No hate, these just still have no use for me.
