Thinking about 12ax7 - Gold Lions?

Re: Thinking about 12ax7 - Gold Lions?

i still reckon looking at speakers will give you more options with feel too. You can have your cake and eat it too if you get the right one. At the cost of some tubes these days, speakers are becoming a cheaper option too!

What you think I should look for in my 212? Right now it has a Vintage 30 and a Classic Lead 80

The ei is one bad ass mofo with tons of mojo. Real nice sounding tube. Gave life to my amps v2 spot. Haven't had a chance to crank it but bedroom levels were nice. The more setting is closer to what I expected and needs it to e

Its hard to say what would be "the best" speaker for you, because everyone's tone is subjective and im not familiar at all with your amp.
There really is no such thing as a "neutral" speaker. Its all a matter of tailoring the tone to what you like best. I do know that the V30 is a very present and cutting speaker and so the brightness and edginess you found in the tungsols for example would potentially be heard as "clarity" in another speaker. That's not to say a v30 is not a great speaker, its juts all horses for courses.
Your amp is a 60watt hight gain kind of machine right? But you want warm and robust but with bite. From the celestion line of speakers, a G12K100 (or the older G12H100) fits that description pretty well. Its fat and agressive at the same time with a less strident top end than the v30. Ive had great success with eminence speakers in mine and others amps too. Have a look at their site. I like the warmth and slow response of the texas heats, but they are an american style speaker and i think you lead towards the British sound.
A private jack might fit the bill tho. Greenback voiced type speakers are always a win for most types of rock. Here's a homespun vid from you tube showing a tone difference between a private jack and a v30. You can hear pretty much everything you need to know in the fisrt 30 seconds as to the differences.

Anyways...its food for thought.
