Thinking about downsizing

Re: Thinking about downsizing

A Ledford 6610 Hi Gain Gain Combo may be what you're after. Australian boutique made quality. I think they're based in Sydney. Judging from the sound clips on the site, it covers all bases very nicely from vintage cleans/crunch to a gainy but not too modern or saturated hard rock sound.

Re: Thinking about downsizing

Not to jack the thread, but I thought one downfall of tube combos, particularly gain-oriented ones, is that it's hard on the tubes to have them in the same enclosure as the speakers and leads to reliability issues, hence the separate 2x12. Bob Pletka of Eurotubes in particular rails emphatically against tube combos on his site, although some people say it's no big deal. I've never owned a tube combo so I don't know, anyone here who can chime in?

If you want to cut down your trips to a minimum, grab a Vetta. Loud enough for any gig, all the effects you could want, and more versatile than most any other amp. They can take a bit of time to tweak, but once you do, they're amazing. I know a lot of guys who have dumped their 100 watt heads + massive racks for a Vetta 2x12 combo and never looked back.

Re: Thinking about downsizing

Well I dont really go for the heavy chug chug too much...

I'd rather explore non-recto options. I'm a bit over the recto thing.

hmmm, then the F50 probably won't be of interest. Not exactly the same as a Recto on it's gain channel, but pretty close.

-You could try the Fender Supersonic. The gain channel is boogie-ish, the low gain tones are very cool and the cleans are great.

Outside of that, perhaps a Rivera combo or a mesa stiletto ace combo.

50w should be fine, too. I've played large festivals with 50-60w amps and had no problems.

Re: Thinking about downsizing

I've always been a bit skeptical of line 6 gear and modelers in general... But I'm willing to look into it. I think it stems from my once owning a v-amp2... *shudders*.

Something inside me says 'you just can't beat tubes' tho...

Re: Thinking about downsizing

I went through this...I ended up with a Boogie as well...

I have used an F30 on stage a bunch. I've miked it and I've used the DI out straight to P.A.

Both ways sound awesome.

I cannot think of a bad thing to say about it. If I was to get really spastically critical, then I could say that the clean channel is not as deep and 3D as my Gibson Goldtone, but that's comparing apples and oranges. For gain and versatility, the Boogie boogies...

Aloha

Re: Thinking about downsizing

For style and tone you cannot beat Orange. The only word I can use for the tone is sweet...but like that thick, translucent thick like honey. They've got the AD30 2x12 combo, the Rocker30 1x12 which are both 30 watts, there's the Rockerverb50 2x12...all great amps.

And if they don't do it for you, i've got a +1 here for the Fender Supersonic. If I could trade my 68 Bassman and distortion pedals for a brand new Supersonic head I would do it in a second...sweet tone, easy to dial in, and vintage style...hard to beat.

I'm kinda glad to hear you're gettin over the Rectifier. Maybe those things will go out of style in a year or two and I can scoop one up on the cheap...

-X

I think there's some credence to this...

But then again....they're tubes. They're wonderful but they have a lifespan to them.

It's kind of like chiding stainless steel frets for chewing up strings.

Sure...it happens...but it's something that happens anyway.

And when it comes down to it...as a Veteran of gigging in New England during the Winter, especially those vicious cold snaps we tend to get after some snowfalls where everything ices over....the appeal of HAVING to go back out into the cold and wrestle a cab in the door has little to no appeal.

Re: Thinking about downsizing

Ditch the 4x12 & grab a Port City Wave 2x12 cab.....you won't miss the 4x12 at all :bigthumb:
