Thinking about downsizing

So I'm currently running a dual recto head and marshall quad (v30's).
I'm getting a bit over having to cart it around and move it, also its bigger than anything im doing any time soon.

I'm thinking I might grab a hi-gain combo or something.

I'm considering an F-50...
I'd run some dirt boxes too, a spina sd-1, fulltone fulldrive2, maybe a jeckle and hyde...

Basically, im after ideas.
I Like getting a nice classic rock tone (ala Led Zeppelin, Kiss), but I also like the 80s Yngwie, Van Halen, Satch sorta shredi soaring tones...
any ideas?

Re: Thinking about downsizing

I'd say just downsize your cab, I picked up an ear candy 2X12 and its much easier to lug around than my old mesa/boogie traditional 4X12.

Re: Thinking about downsizing

Yea go for a smaller cab, I use a Mesa 2x12 with a Dual and it sounds great. Only problem I've ever had is getting it in my car, but its a hell of a lot easier than a 4x12 for sure.

Re: Thinking about downsizing

dude, the f-50 is a DARK AMP DARK

DARK!!!

i couldnt find a tone i could use!

anyway,

im up for the 2x12 cab.

you have a cool head.

Re: Thinking about downsizing

Yea, it'd be a waste to completely downsize... You'll just regret it the instant you do it.

Just get a smaller cab, genz benz g-flex or ear candy buzz bomb.

Re: Thinking about downsizing

No smaller cab.
I used to have a 2x12 (avatar g12h30/v30)... seemed pointless.

I'm definately getting a combo.

Price range is 0 - 2000 US Dollars.

Re: Thinking about downsizing

If you keep the head you can always expand upon it later, unless your wanting to ditch the Mesa for something else.

Do you run your head with all tubes? Or have you removed 2 tubes and 1 rectifier tube to run it at a "half power" setting on Vacuum Tube? Definately makes it crunchier with the quicker saturation.

I'm just curious.

Re: Thinking about downsizing

2000$ = Price for a new Engl Sovereign 100 1x12 Combo.
Four channels capable of nice cleans, very good blues crunch, classic rock/oldschool metal and extreme metal/shred. Also you have seperated eq lots of extra switches(extra gain boost for the lead channels for example), reverb, all out midi support and integrated preamp noisegate.
Sovereigns are the most flexible and tonefull combos i know of. Only thing that comes close in the combo realm might be a mesa roadking, but i think it's even more expensive.

Re: Thinking about downsizing

How about looking into some of the offerings by Orange?
I kinda like the Rocker 30 for classic stuff, I only played it once, but it sounded pretty nice.

Re: Thinking about downsizing

moving to a tube combo isn't a bad idea. The F-50 is a fine amp that you should be able to do a lot with. There's a lot of other great combo amps out there too, so make sure ya look around.
I support the move to downsize.

Rock on ~ kac

Re: Thinking about downsizing

The Engl Soverign looks interesting.
I might have to track one down and give one a try.

Any other suggestions anyone?

Re: Thinking about downsizing

Could you expand on this?

Oh right... It sounded ****. also It seemed pointless for me to carry around a head+case, and a 2x12, when I could just have a 2x12 combo in one package.

My main gripe is that I hate lugging around so much.
If I could get it all done in 2 trips, I would be a happy man.
At the moment it takes me 4 trips... (head, cab, pedalboard (its big atm), guitar+power transformer).
I'd love to downsize my amp and pedalboard and just go (guitar+pedalboard, amp). nice...

+ I don't really do the big venue stuff anymore... And a 100watt combo wuld be more than enough for any of the stuff I did anyway. :) (3000-6000 person venues and some outdoor stuff).

Re: Thinking about downsizing

I hear ya. Though, I gotta admit that for me, carrying around a 2X12 and a head isn't much different from carrying around a 2X12 combo. You can make the trip with the combo in one shot, but they tend to be quite a bit heavier than the head or cab individually. It all kinda evens itself out.

Re: Thinking about downsizing

Perhaps the mesa roadster combo, if you're happy with the recto tone. Not cheap, and no mesa combo is light, but very flexible.

Re: Thinking about downsizing

roadster has the closed back combo; but most combos dont, and will not put out that heavy sound so well unless plugged into the cab from my experience

Re: Thinking about downsizing

Well I dont really go for the heavy chug chug too much...

I'd rather explore non-recto options. I'm a bit over the recto thing.
