Unless you're a studio musician and need a variety of sounds as a job requirement, you really don't need to have more than one or two guitars.

Or unless you're an American, and know that you need a minimum of a few guitars (and will add more as finances & space permit). Life with one guitar is bleak & dismal. Oh so boring. Don't do it, son, I beg of you.

Yes, you do need a variety of guitars. Anything less is unpatriotic.

I'm having a hard time juggling 3 guitars which makes 2 more (I have 5 in total) being kept in a case so I'd really prefer if I didn't want/have to have more

There is something to be said about having just one or two guitars. You really get to know those two guitars, and having less to work with forces you to get the most from them—it's a blessing of poverty, so to speak.

I could see myself getting away with one SG-style guitar and one Tele-style guitar…and being perfectly happy doing so.

+1 i've actually got an SG, a kinda-SG, and a dot, and having limited tonal options has led me to really work with what i have, but in a good way ya kno?

As previously stated, if you don't like the guitar then sell it.
If you have the funds then go guitar shopping, try a few out and find one you really dig.

Not sure what kind of music you play, but I'd get some kind of 335 (and keep the LP & SG). Those are the 3 that I'd have to have. Anything less is unimaginable.

I have been down to one guitar for over 2 years...no big deal and life isn't bleak or dismal and I gig regularly playing a variety of music.

A good player can coax a lot of tones and mojo from a single instrument.....sometimes it is good to know an instrument that well.....so the player plays the guitar and not the other way around.

Now excuse me while I stick needles in my eyes.

being fact that i am bit of a guitard and my brain always wants more gear i have quite the collection of misfits... i can my home the guitar hospital.... i've brought home so many smashed wrecks, relics, and spare parts that i have a collection of guitars that do not have a high resale value at all... mind you because of their shape i didn't pay a lot for them either...

i have cheap stuff like Squier's and Epi's up to USA Gibson and Fender Custom Shop... imported Jackson and Charvels... i have 80's plywood Kramers and custom parts axes... my current count is around 24 solid bodies with a bunch of necks and bodies and parts to put together more!!!

plus i have an amp and pedal collection... i'm out of room!!! but i could never see selling it all and living on one axe... i could see settleing down on one Strat, One Tele, one Super Strat, One Les Paul, One Acoustic, One Classical, Or 2 of each... ha ha ha ha....

The last time i only owned one axe i had to have it repaired and the repair shop kept it for months as it was a big job... so i put together a cheap parts strat to play while my Les Paul was repaired... i was climbing the walls not having a back up... in the end i liked the strat more then the LP but that's another story... now i have back ups for my back ups and their back ups...

the strange part is i have 2 guitars of the same model and years and both feel and sound really different..... the only thing the same about them is the look and shape... beyond that it's a different axe

Have to agree here, my mate stuck with 1 guitar for years and he knows it inside out and gets some really sweet sounds out of a very stock Washburm dual humbucker!

Stop wasting your life away and find a strat that speaks to you, lol. Sell whatever is necessary. I think in general its safe to say that most guitar players will feel at home with either a strat or an LP, if not both. Since the LP isnt doing it for you....you know where to start looking.

+1 here too! BUT, don't go out looking for any one particular guitar.... go with an open mind and try anything and everything, you may just find the one.

I can't imagine owning a guitar that doesn't have bar magnets in the PU's, so that I can swap them. I'd be lost. What would I do with my pile of magnets??? You can stick just so many papers on the frig.

Bill, I feel for you. One guitar, and gigging with it. Whew! I always take two in the event of a string break, the band (and audience) isn't standing around waiting for me.

I had an SG, Strat, and my buddy has a LP. All nice guitars for sure and I'd love to have them all but I never really fell in love with a guitar till I tried a Peavey HP Special. It's the best feeling guitar that I have played and it sounds great even with the stock Peavey pups (I'm having the pups rewound so they're not so hot). It has coil tapping too so it's pretty versatile. I was one of those guys that thought you either had to get a Fender or a Gibson, but there are a lot of other nice guitar companies too. It seems like the HP is a good mix of a Strat and a LP. If you can find a dealer in your area you might wanna give one a shot.

You could never talk me out of having just one kind.. whichever it would be I'd always find myself missing the particular sound of the other.

To me the bare minimum would be Les Paul style guitar, a Stratocaster style guitar, and a Spruce top acoustic guitar.

That said, I have 7 guitars, and use 6 of them very frequently :naughty:

i trade my guitars out for being my number 1... i switch them around... my main beater is in need of a fret dress so i'm using a Jackson as my main axe until it is repaired

I have recenly been thinking about selling off 6 of my guitars and keeping one, or selling all and getting a better guitar with monster upgrades. However, I would miss out on being able to grab either a Strat, Tele, LP, full-hollow electric, 5-string bass, or a cheap acoustic whenever I want. They all look, feel, and sound so different from each other, but they each provide a different kind of enjoyment.

man if you're going to go with one guitar, make it something worth being your only guitar, that feels good in your hands and can get you the tones you like. if i were you, i'd get a small-bodied semi-hollow(maybe a tele-gib? just a suggestion) and outfit it with p-rails and a trem, just for the hell of the fact that it'd be way versatile.
