thinking about swapping out the EMG's in my G&L

My 85' G&L Invader is setup with a EMG 85/SA/SA. They sound too dull to my ears so it's time to go! Any ideas what I should replace them with? I rarely use the middle pup, so i might leave that one empty (the pickup gets in the way sometimes anyway). I'm not sure if the guitar is Alder or some sort of Ash. Oh, it has a Kahler locking trem as well. I have BBQ's in the bridge of my other 2 guitars (01 LP Std. and 01' EBMM Axis), so I want something a little different. I play mostly hard rock/metal and my main amp is a Mesa MKIII blue stripe. The main requirements I have are: tight bottom end and well balanced. I was thinking about either a Custom, CC or perhaps an old JB. I know nothing about single coils, so any reccomendations for the neck would be great. I like something that sounds great for both soloing (w/ high gain) and warm/fat clean.

Thanks!

a jb will suit your needs just fine. custom is nice too. mesas are bottom heavy amps thus i am leaning towards the jb because of that. as for the single coils, are you going for true single coil or perhaps the rails? cool rails will be a good option for the neck with a jb in the bridge.

Before you ditch it, try the 18v mod. It makes the EMG's sound more like passive pickups, and they don't have that super compressed metal feel anymore.

strange that the emg 85 doesn't do it for you. Based on your requirements i would not say that the CC is a good choice as i have experienced a nice sound with it but on the other hand it lacked in the bass department. So if you are not sAtisfied with the emg 85 i would go with the JB.
