I have a marshall tsl 602 combo and this thing is way to big and bulky and loud for my needs. Im planning on selling it soon. I played my friends fender hot rod deluxe and its clean tones were alot better than the ones i was getting with my amp. I liked the distortion in my amp more but, Ive played through DSLs that have a better lead tone to my ears. and even then I feel like im missing somethin. Im looking for a smaller amp with less power that will give me great all around performance. Not just one side of the spectrum.

I'd look into the Randall modular amps.
I really like the idea of the modular combo by Randall......forgot the model name.
Then, instead of buying pedals, you could buy more modules. They have a bunch of them for gain, and several nice clean ones. I tried one in the store and was pretty impressed.....and I didn't even get to try all of them....just Blackface and Recto. It would make a much more sensible all around amp.

I would look at a Mesa Lonestar Classic or LoneStar Special. The LSC runs 60/100 watts; while the LSS ranges from 5/15/30/35. Good clean tones, a variety of overdrive flavors, good reverb. They are professional, ruggedly built amps; and Mesa's typically retain their value extremely well. The LSS is about 1/3 more than the cost of a new DSL401, but you get a LOT more amp. I really like to use my Mesa Mark III and Mark IV combos on top of a 112 extension cab, and I would strongly recommend this configuration with the Lonestar amps as well.

Also, if you can spend more, the Mesa Stiletto II combo has a lot of versatility.
Out of all the Mesas, I like the Stiletto II and Lone Star Special the most.
