Thinking of getting a Cheap-O Floyd "temporarily"

These things are stupidly cheap but I really think I'm going to get a REAL one eventually, but I'd like to slap one on for fitting and alignment purposes and maybe get a good brass block to help the tone a bit.

Are these things THAT bad, or is this indicative of direct-from-manufacturer cheapness? Are the baseplates steel? Are these the same as the mid-level guitars on the market with "Licensed Floyd Roses"?

I'm really happy with the tone of my all-steel Wilkinson 6-hole modern, but the bar is a little short and the leverage just doesn't cut it for the kind of wacky whammy stuff I like to do. Is this thing going to totally suck my tone into a Chinese black hole even with a big brass block?

I have no idea, but that is really f-ing cheap, I would be surprised if it intonates.

Re: Thinking of getting a Cheap-O Floyd "temporarily"

Well, if it means anything, my Wilky was bought from a direct-from-China seller for about $25 and I've seen the same ones sold retail in the U.S. for $75. Those licensed ones are also going for about $45 re-sold here as well. I think part of the price reflects a lack of re-shipping, storing, overhead, etc.

I seriously don't have $120+ for a "real" Floyd or even the sweet Gotoh ones at the moment, but I'm really tired of fighting this 6-hole to do what I want it to do. I also like the option of fine-tuners.

Buy a Kramer Focus, take the Floyd, part out the rest.

If I bought a Kramer Focus, I'd keep it and play it. :) I'm really just wanting to get the fit and alignment right so when I eventually CAN buy a real one, it will drop in. Since I'm pretty much a bedroom player at this stage, I'm not going to obsess with having the "best". I'm just wondering if these things are comparable to the "Licensed Floyds" on mid-priced and lower-budget axes. I have played some of those guitars and the Floyds felt pretty solid.

I'd be willing to bet that the price isn't the only thing that's cheap.

I wouldn't waste my money. If it sounds to good to be true it probably is!

Re: Thinking of getting a Cheap-O Floyd "temporarily"

A real Floyd sounds so much better than any of the licensed ones I've ever played (except maybe an Ibanez Edge), that it's sad. There's no point in saddling yourself with a cheap copy; your guitar will likely nad you if you do.

OFR and Gotoh, Edge org is made by Gotoh, plus the old Schaller with the pos collar thing on....
They are good, the rest is well just the rest.
Maybe the Kähler one...not that I liked that one much...

"When I hear a story too good to be true, it ain't!"

Name the movie and get a cookie.

Re: Thinking of getting a Cheap-O Floyd "temporarily"

OMG. 12 bucks for a trem?!

dude, seriously, don't waste your money. those things will likely be unable to hold strings in one place let alone do all the things a floyd is supposed to.

you don't have money for a real floyd? deal with it. save up for it, and until you can afford one, do without it.

and then get a gotoh floyd, because they're better and cheaper.

it'll probably cut your hand off with some burr or sharp edge - be careful. jeeze, I'm starting to sound like my mother.

Or..... You'll shoot your eye out kid!

Ian, go with the Gotoh.

I like the idea of getting a used Focus and grabbing the Floyd. Some of those old Kramers and Charvels are dirt cheap and can ROCK.
