This is going to sound odd, but I need a new practice chair.

Mr 9finger

Digitally Challenged
I know. I know. "Practice standing up you sissy!" That's how I use to do things. My shoulders have gotten so bad that I can't take it for very long anymore. At least if I don't want to regret if for the next 3 days.

I never thought this would be problematic, but I'm a big guy (6'1"/275lbs), and finding an armless chair that's comfortable and has back support has been a challenge. I've been taking lessons for the last couple months and been trying to practice more, but it's really hard to concentrate if you can't get comfortable.

Any suggestions?

I hear ya bro. I'm 6' 5", pushing 300lbs and have suffered with chronic back pain for the past 40 years...so I understand your plight.

I would suggest hitting the local thrift shops in your area. Not sure what you have in Indiana, but here we have Goodwill, Value Village, Bargain World, St Vincent De Paul, Deseret Industries, Catholic Thrift, American Cancer Society, along with a handful of other's. I see some very nice armless office chairs (with excellent back support) all the time in the $5 to $10 range. Even if you find one without the back support you need, you can usually find some sort of lumbar support for it. Also check craigslist....I did a quick peruse in my area and found 5 or 6 under $20 right off the bat and one for free. You could also put a 'want to buy' ad on cl and see what happens.

Grumptrucks suggestion of playing lying down has some merrit! When I had back surgery in 1973, I could not sit (other than to eat and #2) for six months! I had to be flat on my back. Thank the Lord I had my trusty 57 Les Paul Special. It was with me 24/7 on the bed and not only kept me from going crazy, (well, crazier than I already am!) my chop's improved 100 fold. However, I realize it's not very realistic for your situation!

Good luck to you and I hope you are able to find what you need at a good price.

check out Office Max, they have a pretty good armless chair for 50.00 bucks.....

Re: This is going to sound odd, but I need a new practice chair.

I took the bases from two old office chairs and attched them to the bases of two large car seats from a luxury car. Extremely comfortable. (yeah, I like to modify ALL my music gear, heheh). The car seats allow for some angle adjustment of the backs.

In the past I have simply removed the arms from office chairs, either unbolting them or sawing them off.

Re: This is going to sound odd, but I need a new practice chair.

I use a cheap computer chair that never came with arms. It is adjustable heighth, which is nice. However, I tend to hunch over the guitar and/or lean forward, so back support isn't an issue. For me, a comfortable drum throne (OCDP or Pork Pie) work just as well.

Drum throne with backrest?

I like the cheap office chair with the back removed...one of these.

Parsons chair...Cheap at Walmart.....That is what I use.......No arms and back support good enough for me....Sorry but I am an under-six-footer.....

Plus I use a footstool for extra comfort when sitting and playing...Cause for me I find the guitar too low on my right leg when I play so the footstool helps for me....

I would love to get one of these for my jam room chair. Doesn't solve the arm issue but I sit classical style with the guitar on my left knee so the arms don't bother me.

I use a drum throne or a padded piano bench. I have one of each, and I use whichever one seems comfier at the time.

Thanks guys. Gave me lots of ideas while I was having a major brain fart. Wal Mart has a lot of options and the wife o matic works there so we get a discount. Probably go that direction. Definitely need one of them foot stools to!

They answer is :

Thrift Store Chairs !

Cheap - good - variety .

I'm in the same boat , can relate to your situation . I find chairs with side arm supports that are remove able as well as the back rest .
