Thoughts on 8 bit pedals?

Is this an urban legend, or do true 8 bit guitar effect pedals exist?
I've seen the Ibanez LF7 or Lo-Fi pedal, but I'm more interested in a pedal that more accurately mimics the tones from our favorite gaming consoles of yesteryear.
The LF7 comes close, but everything is more or less overdriven. I'd love to get some clean based 8 bit tones as well.
I did use the search feature, and didn't see an answer to this particular question. That said, I in no way doubt this topic has been discussed before here.
If you have any ideas, or suggestions on finding more info about these guys I'd really appreciate it. Also, any DIY info would be even mo betttah!

Re: Thoughts on 8 bit pedals?

There are a few fuzzes that do a nice 8bit sound maybe pro tone has one not sure... search 8 bit fuzz most of them still have a bit too much sustain and guitaryness to them because all they can do is change the signal so an actual synth would be better but they are close

Re: Thoughts on 8 bit pedals?

All you need is something that clips your signal into a square wave.

Run as many OD, distortion, and/or fuzz boxes as you can into one another and then crush it to pieces with a gate and you'll be there.

right after i read this, i turned on my overdrives, distortion, and fuzz box with the gain up full, cocked my wah, and set my EQ for an upper midrange lo-fi type setting with the gain down. there was waaaay too much noise. like, the noise was louder than when i played. so i tried just the OD, fuzz, and EQ. still too much noise, but it was better. still didn't get a "square" enough sound though, but it might be because i've got a little big muff rather than a f.face.

You need the gate. It just will NOT work if you don't aggressively gate the crap out of it. Using the wah and EQ for anything other than blasting the input and output gains probably worked against you as well.
