Re: Thoughts on a Strat with a Black Korina body
My next build will be a black limba Flying V. This idea has mostly to do with the look I envision. If it sounds close to mahogany but with a wider spectrum I will be very okay with that.
I have built three or four fender style bolt on guitars out of mahogany. Two of them sound really good and are extremely stable for tuning. One was kind of a dud. Another sounded rather bright for some unknown reason.
The one that was a dud just sounded kinda dead, even with maple neck. It turned out kinda heavy. HSS.
The best sounding mahogany strat build, I built for somebody else. It is an awesome guitar. It used African striped mahogany for both the body and the neck and Indian rosewood for the fret board. Beautiful guitar in trans red over the striped mahogany with black grain filler. Black pickguard. It is H/H. It is also lighter than a typical alder strat in weight. Sustain for days.
The second best bolt on out of mahogany was a tele with a maple-ebony neck. It has a trans black maple top over striped African mahogany. H/H. Sounds nothing like a tele. Almost like a Gibson but plays in tune better with a nice note bloom, and more articulate down low. Medium weight.
Once you go to a mahogany/limba type tone wood in a Fender style guitar your leaving the Fender spank behind and creating something else.
