Thoughts on consolidation...

Hi, just thinking about consolidating... I have the major bases covered, but though it might make sense to move one or two and pick up something to cover the two... What do you think? What would you do? I've listed my guitars below. They are all MINT with original cases (unless noted). They all have upgraded wiring and pickups. I won't go through each specifically here, but they are all Gibson, Duncan, or Dimarzio pickups and usually have coil-splitting.

Gibson Les Paul Classic in honeyburst $1200 - 1300

Hamer Studio Custom w/ custom goldtop paintjob. $700 - 800
(paint is VERY good, but not factory)

Epiphone Sheraton in tobacco-burst. $450

Carvin California Carved Goldtop. $700

Charvel MIJ So-Cal in red. $450
(this one has a little damage to the trem area due to the trem moving around during shipping)

Fender American Standard Strat in white with mint-green. $600 - 700

Fender MIM Telecaster in natural. $400 450

Hamer Duotone in tobacco-burst. $275 - $350
(A "2nd" and well played)

Washburn Idol (sold) - $150

Not sure what to do… if anything.

I'd like to have a LP
I'd like to have a Floyd guitar
I'd like to have a Strat or Tele
I'd like to have a semi-hollow
I'd like to have a nice mid-level acoustic

I know I have the above bases covered (except the acoustic) but I have three axes with 2 humbuckers so perhaps I can consolidate and have a little fun. I love all the guitars, but the Les Paul is probably my overall favorite, and the Hamer is easily the best playing guitar.

Potentially, I could do the following:

Sell the Hamer, Carvin, Charvel, Epiphone, Duotone for $2500 and pick up a Gibson Midtown Custom and a $700 - 1000 acoustic

OR

Sell the Carvin and the Epi and get a Gibson Midtown Custom

OR

Sell the Carvin, Gibson, Epi, Duoton and Charvel and get a used Lifeson Axcess LP

Or, sell the Carvin and the Charvel and get a new Carvin CT-4 with Floyd

OR - some other combination? Thoughts? Ideas?

Re: Thoughts on consolidation...

Sell all the ones that are mint, because they obviously don't ever get much use. You know your favorite and least favorite guitars by how much they have been played or not played. My two cents.

Re: Thoughts on consolidation...

If I were you....

I'd keep the LP, US Strat, Tele, and both Hamers unless one is junky and not a good player.

This covers LP, LP Junior/SG, Strat and Tele, Thinline ground. One guitar with a floyd and an upgraded US 335 style should round the herd out.

So you sell the Carvin, Charvel, and Epi to fund a Midtown or used 335 in my mind .

Very true in general. I take very good care of my guitars, so overall the only issues they usually see are the frets being worn.

Re: Thoughts on consolidation...

LOL... yes, you are probably right. I started thinking about it mainly for the Lifeson Les Paul... but I'd have to sell 4 - 6 guitars to get there...

Re: Thoughts on consolidation...

This is all hypothetical but this is what i would do:
Keep the Lester, keep the strat, sell the rest and get a used charvel pro mod.
Save up for a 335.

Re: Thoughts on consolidation...

If, for you, the Strat and Tele are almost interchangeable as a generic Fender type, amalgamate the two into one instrument. (Three PU Tele or a Stratocaster with Twangbanger bridge position pickup.)

One Goldtop with P-Rails and Triple Shot mounting surrounds.

Re: Thoughts on consolidation...

Im feeling you on this. Im really in the same boat, but Im not really selling to get diff gear, but I need the funds and have these guitars not getting much love.. Of course Ive become an Charvel sl-t and now I want yours... But I digress..
Only you can really decide what you want and what is worth selling all the others. You mention a Carvin. Good choice, but why are you selling one to get one?? I assume the current doesnt have a floyd?
You mention selling a strat and a tele, but wanting a strat and tele. ? So, if you have them and they are on your want list, keep em and cross those off the list. Sell whats NOt on your want list to fund what is.
keep your Favorite and/or your best playing.

Strat and Tele - Done

These choices are hard. I HATE to sell gear as I love all that I have. So it has to be worth it to me to do so. Make sure you know what you want before you sell and then get it. Cuz you dont want to end up with remorse.

Re: Thoughts on consolidation...

I intend to have a group of 5 electrics that are all set up for different purposes. That's all I should need to cover everything. I have 2, with a third just weeks away.

minimalism approach to gear.

Re: Thoughts on consolidation...

I've always said that there are 4 guitars that are a must for a working guitar player a 335, a Les Paul, a Strat and a Tele. Now you can Have others and I have not mentioned acoustics. If you are doing metal having a Floyd instead of the. 335 could be a way to go but personally I think every player needs a good acoustic. If you are serious about playing sooner or later you will need one.

Re: Thoughts on consolidation...

I tried to consolidate my collection down to 4 guitars a couple of years ago. I managed to get down to 7 (including an acoustic). Well, thats not including the 5 I keep at school for lessons, the 6 I have as backups to my main 6, one Les Paul, and 2 squiers I've had for years and can't let go of, and another Deluxe American Strat that is just beautiful, but they don't count.

Ok. I did not manage to consolidate.

I am down to 5 amps though. Plus 5 I keep at school for lessons, and one Marshall and one Vox I have as a backup, and a travel amp, and a POD, and the Marshall I'm thinking of ordering soon.

Oh well.... I AM down to 15 pedals....

Good one!

That's the way I cut down my hurd...effective rationalization.

Re: Thoughts on consolidation...

I have no concept of consolidating my collection. I now have 32 guitars, so the post I made earlier about having 4 electric guitars..... well I can't wrap my head around.:scratchch
