Thoughts on Tele colors

Re: Thoughts on Tele colors

There are only 2 tele finishes that I like: butterscotch blonde and Natural Rosewood (yes,a rosewood guitar).

Re: Thoughts on Tele colors

Ash has a nice looking grain, so I wouldn't hide it with a solid finish. If you like red, I'd go with a red dye job and clear nitro over that.

Re: Thoughts on Tele colors

It would be cool to see the gold top gold on more than just the top... my first inclination is to say goldtop, but I'm not sold on the white pickguard.

Re: Thoughts on Tele colors

Fiesta red is one of fender's coolest colors, especially on a tele. Go with that bro, cooler than the grain or the gold. I like gold strats (if the gold is right) but I've never really seen a gold tele. Still Fiesta red is so sweet I'd go with that

Re: Thoughts on Tele colors

I do like the idea of red and gold together, but I don't want to spend too much and it's 15$ for a can of nitro from guitar Reranch. I also hadn't thought about a red stain as I've never applied a stain before to a guitar before. I think that could be really neat, with the grain showing through and all.

I've heard oil based stains are better than water based stains b/c they don't shrink/expand as much with changes in temperature - does that still happen after the water evaporates?

Also, I love all the suggestions for different color guards, but I can't change the color unless I get some paint and respray it, so keep in mind that the guitar will have a white pickguard unless the world explodes - in which case, it won't have any pickguard at all.

Thanks again for the suggestions, Right now I'm thinking red but I have a few more days to decide so it may ultimately be a different color when I get it finished.

Bludave - I would like to put a minihum in the neck position, but I don't have one on hand so I'd have to buy one if I wanted to put it in. I do, however, have an APHII so I wouldn't have to buy one of those, which is why it's going in the guitar.

Remember, I'm trying to build this guitar on a budget, so while a lot of suggestions are great, some of them are outside the budget I'm looking at for the guitar.

Re: Thoughts on Tele colors

Question: If I were to go dye based, should I get alcohol-soluble dyes or water-soluble?

Re: Thoughts on Tele colors

Of the red or gold, I'd go gold.

Of all or reranch's stuff with the white guard, I'd go Lake Placid Blue.

Re: Thoughts on Tele colors

Don't do this guitar!

Send it to me, because I will take good care of it and because I just plain old dog-gone-it want it.

Ship it to my home, prepaid postage and don't forget to include a new set of 10-52 strings.

OK - PS, paint it with a translucent nitro gold before you ship it to me...

If the guitar has a swimming pool route, you can always go with the minihum later. The JD is one of the best bridge pickups for a Tele. That said I have a Firebird mini hum & a hot rail in the bridge and this guitar to can do anything from Country to metal (the guitar can do metal, but I can't :1:)

Re: Thoughts on Tele colors

I like white pickguards on Telecasters. Between red and gold, I would choose red. But I also like translucent finishes on ash-bodied guitars.

If you go with the Stew Mac ColorTone liquid dyes, you can use these with either alcohol or water (or even nitro lacquer, I think). Looking through my Dan Erlewine book on finishing, it sounds like the best stuff to for dying is what they call NGR (Non Grain Raising) reducer, which is alcohol with glycol ether added. Supposedly this stuff doesn't raise the grain like water, but evaporates more slowly than alcohol. You can also find pre-mixed NGR-based stains from Behlen at Garrett Wade, as well as NGR reducer.

I haven't tried this myself, but have been trying to talk myself into a tele build, and have been thinking about green or blue dyed ash. I'd really like to get my hands on some scrap ash to experiment with first, though.

Which one is closest to Fiesta Red? Light Red Mahogany? Mahogany Medium Red?

Thanks for the replies guys, I think I'm going to go with a transparent finish to show off the ash.

Re: Thoughts on Tele colors

There are a few possible complications if you plan on dying ash. But I guess that depends on if you want a smooth finish when your done. If not then never mind. If you want it smooth and shiney, your gonna have to use grain filler. If you put some dark color stain in the grain filler it really helps the grain stand out, but with the grain filler, the dye may not take. This is why a spay on translucent is often used with ash. Re-ranch makes a spay on tranclucent but I think its blue with a touch of green. Of course you may be able to use the their Gibson red translucent spray on for mahogony. (if you ever want that Gibson red trans on magogony don't try to do it with a dye, because it will turn out brown, or root beer)

The other issue with ash is that after the grain filler you need to prep it with sand-n-sealer if you want a smooth finish. You may be able put on S&S after the dye, if it takes, before the clear coat. But a dye isn't gonna take after S&S. I'm not sure how it may work by dying first before grain filler, but since you must sand it between grainfiller treatments it may not work?

Grain filler and S&S will still be required with a solid color too. That is if you don't want to see (and feel) the grain texture through the finish.
