Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

Hey forum peeps I recently won a Kramer Focus guitar in a contest.Its a Maple neck and fret board with not sure of body wood maybe Basswood??Well anyway its nice black body and I put a black Floyd Rose Special locking Trem on it and I decided on the Duncan 59/Custom Hybrid for the Humbucker in the bridge.Then it has two singles after that. I want to make it a 80's metal guitar.What are your thoughts on this pickup just curious thats all??Thanks Oh I play through a Marshall DSL40c with a extension cab.

the 59/Custom hybrid could work well in that guitar. It should be bright enough to balance well with the single coils. Best to use a 300k log volume pot with that set up - that would make the singles happy and would take off any excessive brightness off the humbucker.

there's a lot of opportunity with the situation. first, consider looking for a better version of a FR at some point.

as far as the pickup selection, a lot will depend on your rig and your playing style, but I'm not so sure the 59/C Hybrid will maximize your goals as much as some of the other pickups available.

I agree, for 80ies stuff? JB. The 59/Custom is a great allrounder but if you wanna go specific, there are better pups around. It's like the santoku knife: great allround knife but if I wanna chop a billion onions, I'll use my kiritzuke. If I wanna slice meat, I'll use my yanagiba. same with pups.

One thing I forgot to mention Im not a big fan of high output pickups like anything over 13K I think it gets too compressed and I dont like that sound. So I figured with the 59/customs output of 11.5K that would be perfect outputy to get rude but remain kinda open sounding and not too compressed

Do not like the JB at all way to high output for me TOO COMPRESSED!! Im not wanting to play death metal or extended range or even drop tunnings just nice Dokken,VH,Motley Crue **** like that

OK, back on topic.

If you don't like the JB, which is odd considering you're listing dokken (lynch used the JB and the distortion in the 80ies), VH (used the custom and superD in the 80ies, which is about as hot as the JB) and Motley (Mick used a superD and a JB somewhere in his career: also: HOT!), fine. Then go to the Perpetual Burn. That pup is designed to have the best qualities of the JB (the fluid leads) but with a tighter, more direct response. The perpetual burn is REALLY good.

I just dont like the compression thats all! I like a nice OPEN sounding pickup that can get chunky for rythum,but nice and articulate for lead and still sound open not compressed. I was thinking of the Demon,hoever,I have heard that it lacks some ummph sometimes so I figured the 59/custom would give me that littler hotter gain sound.I already play through a Marshall DSL40c so I have more than enough gain and output with my amp!! And I used to use a JB and didnt like it.

And by the way I know freakin DC output accounts for something maybe not output or whatever.All I know is that I have learned from watching vids,my ears,and listening to George Lynch vids that he even referred to DC K numbers that when they get above 13 he quoted in saying that "That when a pickup gets above 13K they lose the tone of the guitar and get too compressed"And I did agree because I heard it with the JB it just loses its openness I guess it just gets too gainy and compressed. Thats all I was saying.So anyways my main question wasnt the freakin JB it was your thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid pickup to accomplish 80's type metal.Not on what pickup I should get.The 59/custom hybrid is ordered already and n its way so the JB is mute at this point for fuchs sake guys.

George Lynch can only speak for what sounds good to George Lynch. DCR readings on pickups that he's used/promoted/sells over his career goes up and down as the years go by. the DCR on the pickups he used to get the only sounds he's famous for are up over 13k, to be certain.

DCR is not all there is when it comes to how a pickup sounds. there's also inductance (henries) and capacitance(nF). take a 13k DCR and lay the wire so flat and tight that the distributed capacitance shoots up and that open transparency is out the door.

but here are one or two dudes that can help out with how those things relate, starting at 55:00 - or watch the full 1:07:48 if you want



either way, people are trying to help out by suggesting what you have might not be the best thing to get you where you want to be

A few things….

#1 dc/k ≠ output, but it's a pretty good indicator usually.

#2 JB is an obvious answer, but it isn't going to hit all there tones you want.

#3 I'm gonna throw out the Screamin' Demon, and 250k pots.

That said, I play with either a PG or a JB8, and the other guitar player uses JB's -

I thought about the Demon first,but decided to go with the 59/custom hybrid instead.

I actually found out the body is a Asian Mohagoney.I'm guessing Nato. And the neck and fret is Maple so it should have a decent balance of both some warmth and brightness in the guitar alone.

The Hybrid should do what you want as long as your amp can do the heavy lifting and it sounds like with the Marshall you have it shouldn`t be a problem. I love the JB but if your not a fan of the compression I could see why you wouldn`t want to use it
