Thoughts on the Gibson Les Paul Silverburst

I believe that they were made in the 70's and 80's and I want to know typically what you guys think about these models. I've seen several on eBay and I'm very interested, but they're not as expensive as I would guess. Reasons? Anyway, thanks everyone in advance.

Re: Thoughts on the Gibson Les Paul Silverburst

Well, I think the price on them is outrageous, but then I think that of all Les Pauls in general. There's not really too much that's unusual about them. They were made like a normal Custom, but Gibson used the same paint that Buick used to paint cars to create the silver burst scheme. It's just a theory, but I think the paint was heavy enough to darken the tone considerably. Over time, exposure to bar smoke and age caused a lot of the finishes to oxidize, which made them look green or gold. They seem to be going for the same price as other Pauls of the same era, a little more if the finish hasn't oxidized yet (kind of a rarity).

Re: Thoughts on the Gibson Les Paul Silverburst

Thanks a lot Hellion for the words, anyone want to confirm or neutralize his theory that the paint darkens the tone? Or simply have something to say yourself? Please reply!

Re: Thoughts on the Gibson Les Paul Silverburst

I do recall somewhere that Gibson stopped making this finish due to comlpaints about the way way the paint affected it. However conversations and reports from direct users haven't really confirmed that thought.

They are pretty badass.

Re: Thoughts on the Gibson Les Paul Silverburst

i like the finish as well...one of my faves...

:) I know you like 'um, I've seen your beauty! Tell me, if experience with other Les Paul models, say the Standard, have you noticed any tonal differences between the two? Please try to disregard all modifications as I want to know the differences between the two when they're stock...even though I'd imagine it to be quite difficult to find a stock one after all the decades of playing. Anyway...thanks!

Paint and tone, no difference! Tone is in the wood. Take two same type of woods from different trees and that there is what will give you the difference in tone. All I can say is I had 2 silverburst, an 82 and this 79 and the 82 is the TONE MONSTER. It was a 1 1/2lb heavier.

79 goes bye-bye on the 21st, shipped to the mainland to some lucky ebay buyer. I will be getting a maple neck Les Paul, don`t know if it will be the camo ZW or one from the custom shop.

Very nice on the successful selling of your 79 and the pickup of a Custom LP. Awesome!

But back on topic...so do you believe the 80 models to be better produced? Is there any difference in the way they were made/supplies/etc.? If you know, I'd love to learn.

Re: Thoughts on the Gibson Les Paul Silverburst

i love that silverburst. first time i saw it i started having a major G.A.S. attack. hasn't Gibson re-issued those silverburst `Pauls? about 1,999 bucks, i think. i saw it somewhere like on interstate music, samash, or musician's friend... something like that, somewhere.

Re: Thoughts on the Gibson Les Paul Silverburst

This is my dream guitar as of now. I'd take it over a real Gibson anyday.

Heritage custom Les Paul Silverburst
Solid one piece South American mahogany body, no binding.
Rock maple one piece neck, ebony fingerboard with rose inlay. http://www.mirabellaguitars.com/inlayrose.jpg (with a few modifications). Black binding.
Locking grover tuners.
SD Jazz neck. Tom Anderson H2+ bridge.
Coil split tone linear 500k pots. Standard 500k audio taper volume pots.
TOM piezo bridge, aluminum tailpiece. Bone nut.

No, I have to disagree. The basic tone IS in the wood. But anything that you do to the wood will change the tone. Warren DiMartini of Ratt stated in an interview that when he had his snakeskin Charvels made, there was a huge difference in tone if the body had been finished prior to covering. I refinished an SG Standard in 1990 and compared to my other SG from the same era, the tone of the refinished (I painted it white) as opposed to the other one (wine red stain with typical nitrocellulose finishing) was vastly different, much, much darker (think roar as opposed to scream). My conclusion was that the paint had muted certain frequencies that would normally be inherant in the body style (same wood, same year).

Re: Thoughts on the Gibson Les Paul Silverburst

Another question, if the guitar has "SECOND" engraved into the back of the headstock - I know it means that something of it wasn't at par, but could you give me some ideas on what might set this off? I did notice the guitar was difficult to tune, but I'm not sure if that alone is the reason. I need to know before dropping $1500 for it! Thanks.

I would not pay $1500 for a factory second.

Seconds are normally guitars that have finish or cosmetic flaws that the builders deemed "imperfect", kind of like buying tires that are "blems". They work fine, and don't have mechanical problems, they just have something that's just not quite right about the way they look; maybe an orange peel finish in one spot or something similar. $1500 is a lot of coin to drop on an instrument, though. Do you like the guitar? If it works for you, then it's worth it. If it doesn't, it's not.

Thanks for the clear definition. Well the guitar looks great and plays great as well. Sounds like a keeper...and don't worry about the dough - I can get it a little bit cheaper. Thanks for the reply!

Re: Thoughts on the Gibson Les Paul Silverburst

Is it a silverburst that you bought? If so, congrats. They're sort of like problem children, but with the right influence, they can lead a normal productive life! LOL
