I am thinking of buying 1 or 2 Groove tubes 12ax7m ecc83 tubes and wanted to know how it compares to a Electroharmonix 12ax7 ?

Re: thoughts on the new Mullard Groove tube pre amp tube

Kicks ass. I love the 12ax7m. Really rich and toneful; my favorite modern production Ecc83/ 12ax7 made yet.

Re: thoughts on the new Mullard Groove tube pre amp tube

I would seriously doubt they lack gain. I've got a couple on order...so I can let you know in a few days. GJ loves them, along with the Gt-12AX7C's, and GJ's not afraid of gain. I think you would find them as suitable in the gain dept as most AX7's out there.

Re: thoughts on the new Mullard Groove tube pre amp tube

No JJ's sucked gain, the GT got it back for me. Like I said earlier, my favorite modern day production tube without a doubt in my mind. :)

I've got a couple barely used I'd sell for $12 ea shipped. They are ok, just didn't seem to do much with my Budda for some reason. I hear they work really well with Non Master Volume amps. Some guys really dig 'em. I've got 3 actually.

Re: thoughts on the new Mullard Groove tube pre amp tube

Great tubes, but I think they work best at taking an amp with almost enough gain and pushing it to where it should be, gainwise. They also fatten up a preamp section, moreso than other gainy 12AX7's. GT is really kicking ass nowadays! Sure, a lot of their tubes are not made by them, and re-labeled, but a few aren't. GT has extremely strict testing guidelines. Many of the tubes they buy are tossed away, or sold to other distributors, I've heard. That's what you're paying for....the best of the batches. For amps made for high gain, I still like the GT12AX7C the best, which actually sounded better in my Bogner than the M. I think the M's would sound best in JCM's, DSL's, Mesas, and Hughes and Kettners, but Bogners and Diezels are so finely tuned for gain around the Chinese pre, that that's what sounds best in them.

Todd, at revolutionguitar.com is a friend of mine, and he tosses free tubes at me occasionally to see what I think of them. Tomorrow, I should have another great gainy pre tube that many have forgotten about...Tungsol. It'll be here tomorrow, and I'm going to test it in my Ecstasy and Jubilee, to see how it's different from the GT12AX7C and Sovtek 12AX7LPS. I'll keep you posted, because I know that Tungsols were among the very best 12AX7s ever made.

Definetely a great PA tube. Warmed up the entire voice of my Mesa.

I have a 2 channel dual rectifier with El34 Svetlanas in it. I have EH preamp tubes now. Sould I just get 1 or 2 or 3 tubes to make a difference? the fxloop and phase inverter tubes should not matter to the best of my knowledge.

5 Testimonies. What more do you need? ROFL :bigthumb: :biglaugh: :headbang:

Re: thoughts on the new Mullard Groove tube pre amp tube

here's one more

I use one in V1 of my Deluxe Reverb RI. They do not lack gain ... GT sorts them for conformity to old Mullard specs, which were consistently higher gain than many of the more common current production 12AX7s.

Re: thoughts on the new Mullard Groove tube pre amp tube

I have them in my marshall 9001 preamp in the V2 and V3 spots. They definately gave my sound more punch and a bit more clarity. As far as gain they seem to be pretty good. Not as much as an EH but I think the sound is MUCH better.

Re: thoughts on the new Mullard Groove tube pre amp tube

IME they're great in some amps and merely good in others. Same can be said of positions in the amp. They tend to make a bigger difference in V1 and V2 than in other positions.

If you fully outfit an amp with them, you're quite possibly wasting your money.

Re: thoughts on the new Mullard Groove tube pre amp tube

the gt-m is a great preamp tube plenty of gain and a nice fat tone with low noise . i use gt-c's in my soldano because the gt-m seemed too much a little too fat in that amp but in a jcm 800/900 or plexi or something like that your golden!!

That's the way I feel about them. I'd buy one to put in the V1 and keep the other positions balanced with something like JJs.
