Thoughts on the Peavey 6505 combo

I'm looking for a decent tube amp to take on the ship with me. I've heard great things about this amp. Unfortunately I don't have the opportunity to play many amps out here because... well you cant plug a ukelele into an amplifier. Anyway I was curious about it, and wondering what you guys thought about it? What are its limits, what are its strengths, etc..

Thanks!

Re: Thoughts on the Peavey 6505 combo

They sound good but totally suck if you want to transport them. I'm pretty strong and carrying one of those around is a challenge. It is a great 2x12 to have especially if you want to play 80's or the brootz. It has good sustain, good harmonics, and it can be dialed in for fairly nice cleans. I actually liked the overdrive better than the Jsx combo but the Jsx is more versatile and has a great clean channel. Overall the 6505 is nice.

6505 Head plus Mesa Boogie Rectifier Standard (Oversize) cabinet = win
6505 combo = uhhh, not so much.

Stock speakers suck and the combo's construction just isn't going to yield the kinda great tone a dedicated cab will.
You absolutely cannot go wrong with the 6505 head + Recto Standard Oversize 4x12 combination. It's a popular recording and live solution for good reason

I would LOVE a stack, but I don't think bringing that on a ship is a good idea though. I'm not sure though, you think it would be ok? I'm worried about two things. Size, and constant rocking. (I guess I should clarify on rocking. Not playing all day but a ship rocking back and forth). That's why I'm looking for a combo amp.

Re: Thoughts on the Peavey 6505 combo

are you talking about the 1x12 that just came out @ 60 watts, or the original 2x12 @ 120 watts?

Re: Thoughts on the Peavey 6505 combo

Check out the Blackstar HT series, I just ditched my Rebel 30 for a HT-40, great sounding amp, great price, and way more versatile than the 6505.

6505 = made in China.

For somewhere near the same money, you could get a used Mesa Boogie DC-5. Or even an Nomad...

Are they?

I am sure the 6505, 3120s, and JSX amps are all US made while the rest of their amps are MIC.

I highly doubt they are made in china. I had a 5150 combo for a long time and was totally satisfied with it. Awesome low end thanks to the closed back, great tone, but super heavy

I'm pretty sure. I could swear I saw a 6505 combo in GC not too long ago... It said something liked "Designed and Engineered by Peavey in USA" and on the back panel "Made in China."

Come to think of it, it might have been the 1x12 60w version, because I remember being surprised that an all-tube brand name amp over 50w was only $600.

Maybe the 2x12 120w is the one made in USA?

You saying the 1x12 combo isnt very good?? I was thinking it maybe an opportunity to get the 6505 tone at a better price.. Id run it thru a 2x12 cab and have the combo option on the go..

you can carry the 112 with one hand. The 1x12, I say.
great product, the green channel is really nice, nice drive too.
add a spring reverb, and, what the hell, a lead channel, for 599 US ?

Sounds like the head, too. Don't know how they did that, but it does, and it does it without shaking itself apart like I thought it would. The stock speaker certainly does not suck. It's fine.

Amp of the Year.

I love mine. I add a 212 to it, and run it in stereo with my half stack, each with the post-master general on 5 and it's the best thing I ever did, even better than when I was an astronaut-cowboy and a fireman at the same time.

Re: Thoughts on the Peavey 6505 combo

almost forgot, if you want to do any recording while you are at sea, it has the mic sim direct XLR out, too. Really is a great product, to me it sounds better and is more flexible and easy to use than all the L6/Vox/Vyper modelers, the Alchemist, and the Jet City 333s.

Re: Thoughts on the Peavey 6505 combo

6505, 6505+, and 6505 2x12 are all amde in the US. 6505 1x12 made in china. Haven't heard the 1x12 yet but i love the 6505's. I want the 6505 head but would settle on the 2x12. GVreat products, Gain for days. Not the best cleans but not hard to get something you like unless you play jazz. Just roll back on the volume and tone on the guitar a little to get a good clean.

Well I dunno about live but none of the mic'd up clips I've heard have convinced it sits well in the mix, definitely not that kind of perfect mid range quality you get from combining the Recto OS cab with the amp head.

What an interesting opportunity to put a 1x12 MIC next a 2x12 MIA and see/hear any differences (other than the obvious speaker/cab config).

Agreed. I would like to hear both next to eachother but it's hard to say because it's 60watts vs 120 watts. it's hard to compare because of that difference and what tubes they ship with. granted i'm sure when they make it in America many of the parts are made in china, taiwan, anyway. My preference would be the 2x12 or head simply because I love power and this is a loud amp. I have seen quite a few complaints about the 1x12 on the peavey boards in regards to malfunctions. I would chaulk it up to the 1x12 still being a new design in it's first generation and the bugs are still being worked out.
