Thoughts on Yamaha Hollowbodies?

Today I was in a guitar store, and I got the rare chance to play some hollowbodies. Of them, the one that stood out for me was the Yamaha one that I played:

It was one of the most resonant hollowbodies I've touched recently, even unplugged it was almost acoustic loud, and the tone was just warm, dark, mellow and yet articulate, as a good hollowbody should in my mind. Anyone have any thoughts on them?

Sounds like you already have formed quite the strong opinion.

If the shoe fits, wear it.

edit: I have a 1974 Yamaha FG-160 that has been terribly abused for the past 30 years (canoe trips, camping) and has absolutely remarkable build quality. Sounds very nice too.

Haha, might have been a fluke though. Notably, it'll be a while before I can afford a nice hollowbody, so clearly that exact one wont be in there by the time I can actually raise the funds. So I'm asking in general, for the brand, general build quality. Eg, some Gibsons that I have played nail that 'perfect hollowbody tone' that I look for, and some sound a little dead so...

Re: Thoughts on Yamaha Hollowbodies?

I had one of the cheaper ones (335 style), it played really well and sounded good acoustically. The pups were a little weak. Got a good trade offer so I traded it. I thought it played and felt really good, but I've had 5 or 6 solid body Yamaha's and thought they just felt really really stiff, especially in the neck.

Yamaha makes the best guitars you'll never buy....

Hahaha

That's a pretty accurate assessment right there :fing2:

I don't know why people constantly think Yamaha is a joke, but they do make some nice guitars. I for one would love to buy one of those TVL models.

Yamaha > (insert many brands here)

Me love my SA2200..the electronics are just a bit crappy but hey.

Re: Thoughts on Yamaha Hollowbodies?

The high end Yamaha's are pretty good IMO. They are a little underrated because 1) their lower budget lines & 2) They are better know for motorcycles.

Re: Thoughts on Yamaha Hollowbodies?

Can't knock my MSG Standard, SA2200 or LL400 at all. They are all really nicely put together instruments. The pups in the MSG have been changed, but there's really no need in the SA2200.
