Thrash Metal Amp

Hi, guys. I'm looking to replace my current amp, a Fender Mustang I (it sucks, but what do you expect for $100?). I now have a budget of about $1000, +/- $100. I need an amp with a tight bass, as I play rhythm with a lot of palm-muted alternate picking, and I like to be able to hear each note individually. I play mostly thrash metal (Kreator, Exodus, Sodom, Megadeth, Testament, Overkill, etc.), but I also need to be able to get some well-defined death metal tones (Death, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth, etc.). I don't care a lot about cleans, as long as they aren't very dirty (duh). I would prefer to get a combo amp. I want something that will perform well at lower volumes (I practice at home) but am willing to get an attenuator if necessary. Also, I need something that will be good for studio recording, as my band plans on releasing a demo sometime soon. Currently, I'm considering the Peavey 6505+ 112 Combo. From what I've heard, it seems to be a good solution. The only thing I'm a little worried about is the 6L6 tubes; I've heard that they can have a flabby bass and that the EL-34's would be better for the tone I'm going for. So if you have any good combo amps with EL-34's that you think would be good for my style, please don't hesitate to suggest them. Thanks a lot for you help.

Re: Thrash Metal Amp

I think you have the tube thing reversed. 6505 is a tight amp and sounds right up your alley. For your budget you can get a used 5150 and nice 2x12(Orange, Mesa, Bogner). You'd be set / thread

Thanks for the rec. However, I think the 2x12 is going a bit over my total budget, since i also have to get a mic.
Also, what will the difference in sound be between a 1x12 and a 2x12?

Re: Thrash Metal Amp

stick with the 6505 combo.

Don't worry about the 6L6's. With the right speakers, 6505s are tight as a witch's tw..well.. you get the idea - they retain their tightness, while still dishing out thick, meaty tone. I feel that they tend to prefer Vintage 30-type speakers, and greenback-types as well.

If you can get one used, even better, that'll give you some more breathing room for a nice mic and a nice mic preamp to go with it.

You could try the XXX combo if you can find one used (Peavey doesn't make em anymore) - it's a bit of a different sound than the 6505, but still kicks ass for thrash (Eric Peterson from Testament used to use a XXX stack live), and it will give you the option of using either 6L6s or EL34's with the bias selector switch.

Peavey 6505 is probably gonna be your best bet if you want a prolevel amp for thrash at your price price point.

Pretty bloody versatile amps they are :

Not just for OTT Metal tones . . .

The 6505 is an excellent amp for those styles, especially for the prices it goes for used.

I wouldn't personally go for the combo. I've always preferred a separate cab.
