Thrash Metal Amp

Re: Thrash Metal Amp

i'm not gona be redundant and say the 6505+ is gona be perfect (cuz it will be) but i'm gona add that the Mustang I is actually pretty bad-ass for a li'l practice combo....

Re: Thrash Metal Amp

The 6505 is an excellent amp for those styles, especially for the prices it goes for used.

I wouldn't personally go for the combo. I've always preferred a separate cab.

I'm not going to be gigging for a while, though. By the time I do start gigging, I'll have enough saved up for a half stack, and I'll just use that. Also, there won't be much of a difference, if any, between a mic'd 2x12 combo, 1x12 combo and 4x12 cab, right?

Re: Thrash Metal Amp

Alright, so currently in consideration: Peavey 6505+, Peavey Triple XXX, Marshall JCM800
I'm going for a tone similar to Sodom's Agent Orange, Sadus's Chemical Exposure, Kreator's Enemy of God (with a little less bass), Tankard's Beast of Bourbon, and Exodus's Bonded by Blood.
For good examples of tone from each album (in order): Agent Orange, Certain Death, Enemy of God, Die With a Beer in Your Hand, A Lesson In Violence.
I really love the definition heard in Bonded by Blood, but I also want the "presence" heard in Chemical Exposure, Enemy of God (with a little less bass), and Beast of Bourbon.
I know that part of the tone comes from technique, which is why I've been working for the past few months to perfect my picking articulation.
Again, thanks a lot for your help.

It looks like the 6505 combos are closed back so that's a plus I didn't expect.

I like separate cabinets as they usually sound better to me. They also feel more durable to me and avoid rattling issues. I also find a combo much heavier and more difficult to haul around.

I wouldn't be concerned about volume when gigging with either rig. The combo will be loud enough but the cab will spread the sound more evenly.

When you put a microphone right in front of the speaker it only picks that speaker, no matter the enclosure. The enclosure design may affect the tone.

Scratch the JCM800 off your list... Great amps but they wont do thrash not without either some pedals upfront or some serious mods. They also arent very apartment friendly.

That being said the sound you hear on bonded by blood is a Todd Langner modded JCM800. I have one of these and they are truly beasts. But they are also a far cry from a stock JCM800.

If you run across one try out an Ampeg VH140C. These were solid state amps they made a few years ago. They will do some flat stunning death metal tones. They also are much more manageable at low volume and are much lighter than a tube amp to carry. But they can be a bit harder to find.

The old original series Marshall Valvestates would also do a good thrash tone you can hear them on Prongs Snap your fingers snap your neck and Static X's Push it. The newer series arent so hot though.

Another good thrash tone is from the Sansamp PSA1 original. With a decent power amp those things will tear your socks off.

Lots of options out there. What i would do is start hunting in your local music stores used piles. Some good deals are to be had right now as christmas is getting close and people need to free up cash.

Re: Thrash Metal Amp

I've been listening to Valvestates for the past 15 mins...amazing.
I think these may be exactly what I'm looking for...if I can find one.
Would you recommend any specific model? The 8080 and 8100 sound good, but I haven't really given much else a listen.
I managed to find 1 of the AMPEG VH-140C's, but it's in Florida...so I'll have to get it shipped, and that may be an issue (I live in California). http://www.guitarcenter.com/In-Store-Used-USED-AMPEG-VH140C-106993706-i2212770.gc?&source=4WFRWXX&CAWELAID=1066502864
By the way, I ****ing LOVE their tone, from what I've heard on YouTube covers.
Also: what's the difference between the VH-140C and the SS-140C?
EDIT: A 2x12 combo version of the AMPEG VH-140C was just posted on Craigslist by someone who lives about 15 min away from me. I'll have to check it out.

the 8100 and randall rg75/g3 are similar - both are hybrids. the randalls are tighter, as you described wanting. the 8100 is looser and has more biting top end. randall is built more solid; nicer line out sound. 8100 has better medium/low gain sounds.

Randall's clean side takes pedals really well (like the marshall jackhammer).

I kinda like them both, I go back and forth for thrash riffs. Both are around 2 hundo used.

here's the g3 followed by the 8100:

How would the Randall compare to the Ampeg for my style? I can get either ATM. Cost (in this case) is not an issue, as they are both well within budget. And of course, also in consideration is the 6505, but I won't give that further consideration until I try it because I've heard that it's voiced for metalcore, not thrash.

Re: Thrash Metal Amp

What ever you're taking, I want some of it too.
PM me with your email and I'll send you some clips once I get the amp. :P
I'm thinking I'll record riffs from "A Lesson in Violence" by Exodus, "Agent Orange" by Sodom, "Deny the Cross" by Overkill, "Enemy of God" by Kreator, and "Creeping Death" by Metallica.
And, of course, there will be the demo, which I will probably have recorded by February or March (5 tracks composed, but I may trash 1 because it's too generic) You can check out the pre-production tracks of three of them on YouTube here. Excuse the crappy playing, I was a) doing it in a rush, not something I'll be doing for the final product, b) not nearly as proficient in guitar then, and c) my technique has progressed a LOT in the past 2 or 3 months (I can now play the aforementioned songs (or main riffs of them) with a decent proficiency).
Also, if these compositions sound generic, it's because they are. They're meant to be that way, since they're only a template of the song that will appear on the demo. Thanks for watching.

That is news to me.
Was/is EHV metalcore ?

not sure - the only ampeg I ever played that was hot rodded for thrash was the lee jackson one; it was one of the few factory hot-rodded amps I can recall seeing around that time period - most needed pedals or to be modded in shops.

Re: Thrash Metal Amp

Try a DIME .I love mine.

That would be an awesome amp. It's very affordable, it's solid-state so you can get it to sound good with low volumes. It captures the Dime sound pretty well. Not everybody likes that, though. I know I do. And that's pretty good trash sound imo. You can get it in a combo or a head/cab.

Or if you're not a tube-amp purist, Line6 DT50/25 are pertty cool. They dohave tube pre- and power amps and just a little digital modelling along the way. You can get almost any kind of sound out of them, not just trash sounds. And they sound very close to a all-tube amp, plus the come with good effects. The com in a head/1x12combo/2x12combo versions. They might be a little over your budget but they'd be far more versatile then the Peavey.

But the 6505 is beast amp, simple and sounds monster. If that's what you want and need, go for it.

...It was voiced for Eddie Van Halen. Metalcore didn't even exist when the amp was designed.
